Quebec train derailment could boost Keystone pipelineOttawa Citizen – by WILLIAM MARSDEN

WASHINGTON – The deadly explosion of a derailed train carrying crude oil in the remote town of Lac-Mégantic, Que., likely will spark fresh arguments in the rancorous debate over the safety of the giant Keystone XL pipeline.

“TransCanada (owner of Keystone XL) and the other pipeline proponents are going to try to use this (accident) to boost their case but it’s a real double-edged sword for them,” Keith Steward, the climate and energy coordinator at Greenpeace in Toronto, said. “Pipelines and rail both have safety issues and both can be a hell of a lot safer than they are today.”   Continue reading “Quebec train derailment could boost Keystone pipeline”

Already dealing with a scandal involving its higher scrutiny of political groups seeking nonprofit status, and the revelation that it claims the power to read taxpayers’ emails, the agency is now facing questions about how it wound up leaking the Social Security numbers of thousands of taxpayers.   Continue reading “IRS Screw-Up Leaks Thousands of Social Security Numbers”

GAS-OIL PRICESThe Republic – by Stephen Singer

The preliminary plan proposed by Algonquin Gas Transmissions, a unit of Spectra Energy in Houston, would build and replace about 44 miles of pipeline in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island, install a new pipeline to span the Hudson River in New York and build compressor stations to boost gas flow.   Continue reading “Power plants balk at upgraded natural gas pipeline eyed for suburban New York City to Boston”

Lawrence O'Donnell and friends want us to shut up voluntarily--for nowExaminer – by Kurt Hofmann

With “gun violence” continuing to plummet (while gun sales continue to soar), the gun prohibitionists are apparently running low on “gun violence” to exploit, and are thus reduced to blaming their favorite bogeyman, the NRA, for violence committed (or at least attempted) without guns. St. Louis Gun Rights Examiner noted in April that some were blaming the NRA for the Boston bombingPolitico quoted MSNBC’s resident socialist (oops–that doesn’t narrow things down much, does it?) Lawrence O’Donnell, claiming that without the NRA’s influence, the black powder used in the bombs would have had chemical “taggants” to help trace the bomb-making materials:   Continue reading “Running low on ‘gun violence,’ gun-haters now blame NRA for attempted poisonings”
