Over the past year, there have been so many stories of violence and injustice in America, and even the most well-known deserve to be revisited. This is one: Last July, Sandra Bland was pulled over by a Texas state trooper for, he said, failing to signal when she changed lanes. After the 28-year-old questioned his instruction to put out her cigarette and refused to get out of the car, the trooper arrested her for assault of an officer. Bland didn’t have enough money for the $500 bail bondsman’s fee, and so she was held in jail. Within 65 hours of her arrest, she was dead. The coroner determined that she had hanged herself with a noose fashioned from a garbage bag.

Things are not always what they seem in the natural world. What looks like a snake could turn out to be a clever little caterpillar, or a regular apple could be so much more. If you look at the picture below, you’ll probably just see a giant pile of firewood. But look closer, and you might find something else that doesn’t belong.

What would you think if you were sitting home and you suddenly saw yourself on television, identified as a suspect in the deadliest attack on law enforcement officers since the 9/11 attacks? Freaked out would be one descriptor at least. It would be worse if you were identified as a suspect simply because you were exercising your constitutional rights.

That is what happened to Mark Hughes who, as we reported while it happened last night, was mistakenly identified by the Dallas Police Department in a tweet as one of the suspects in yesterday’s deadly shootings in Dallas:   Continue reading “In Dallas, Mark Hughes Exercising His Second Amendment Rights Leads To A Rush To Judgement”

Without mentioning Castile’s name, the gun rights organization called the reports of the 32-year-old’s death “troubling” and said they “must be thoroughly investigated”.   Continue reading “NRA comments on Philando Castile shooting without using his name”

Jason Galvin spotted an eagle that was entangled in a bit of rope in a tree in Minnesota.  It had been hanging there for two days.  He told his wife, Jackie.  She thought something must be done.  But the authorities, the Department of Natural Resources, the Sheriffs Office, City Hall, the Fire Department, the University of Minnesota Raptor Center, didn’t.  They all gave her the same story.
