More than 90,000 Jews braved the cold at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey Wednesday to celebrate the historic completion of the study of the entire Talmud, sending a strong message of resilience days after a stabbing in a New York rabbi’s home left five people wounded.

The Siyum HaShas celebrates the study of the Talmud, which is said to be among the most challenging religious texts in the world. The book, comprised of 2,711 double-sides pages, takes seven-and-a-half years to complete, with one page read per day. America is experiencing a social and cultural crisis. Anti-Semitism is one of its symptoms.

Years ago, the Israeli historian Shulamit Volkov concluded that anti-Semitism is best understood as a “cultural code.” Although anti-Semitism victimizes Jews, it actually reveals far less about them than it does about the culture that surrounds and stigmatizes them. Volkov drew her evidence from late 19th-century Germany, where, she showed, anti-Semitism “served as a code, a signal for a much larger and more important political and cultural phenomenon.” But her argument applies equal well to contemporary America, where the resurgence of anti-Semitism likewise reflects deep social and cultural tensions.  Continue reading “Anti-Semitism is a symptom”

On the heels of the Monsey machete attack, four Jewish lawmakers on Sunday demanded the governor call a state of emergency and take current hate-crimes cases out of the hands of local district attorneys and turn them over to a special prosecutor.

“Orthodox Jews are being regularly assaulted, menaced, stabbed and murdered in increasing numbers,” reads the letter — signed by city councilmen Chaim Deutsch and Kalman Yeger, as well as state Sen. The Guardian Angels, a private, unarmed crime prevention group, said it would start patrolling the New York borough of Brooklyn on Sunday following a series of anti-Semitic attacks.

Curtis Sliwa, who founded the organization in New York City in 1979, said the patrols would start at noon in the Crown Heights neighborhood and expand to Williamsburg and Borough Park later in the day. Porum, OK — The badge has been tarnished once again this week by a bad cop. And, once again, it has to do with preying on children. This time, it was Porum Police Department’s second highest ranking cop, arrested on multiple counts of child sexual abuse.

On Thursday, Asst. Porum Police Chief David Ray Kash, 49, was arrested and charged for crimes associated with the sexual assault of two small children: a nine-year-old and a seven-year-old.
