In this photo taken from a remote camera at the Lazovsky State Nature Reserve in the Primorye region of Russia’s Far East on Dec. 8, 2011, a golden eagle attacks a deer. Remote cameras set up to track Siberian tigers in Russia have caught a golden eagle attack on a sika deer, snapping three photos as the massive bird digs its talons into the distressed animal’s back. Golden eagles typically eat small birds or mammals, but they’ve also been known to target deer. It’s rare for a camera to catch such an attack in progress. Remote cameras intended to monitor Siberian tigers in Russia instead caught a golden eagle’s fatal attack on a deer, snapping three photos as the massive bird dug its talons into the distressed animal’s back.

London’s Zoological Society, which distributed the pictures to journalists, said the sequence showed a rare but not unheard of attack by a golden eagle. The society’s Linda Kerley said she first realized something was up when she approached the wildlife-monitoring device — also called a camera trap — and found a mangled deer carcass nearby.   Continue reading “Cameras capture eagle killing deer in Russia”

Last Wednesday, the Fed announced that it would not be tapering its bond buying program. This news was released at precisely 2 pm in Washington “as measured by the national atomic clock.” It takes 7 milliseconds for this information to get to Chicago. However, several huge orders that were based on the Fed’s decision were placed on Chicago exchanges 2-3 milliseconds after 2 pm. How did this happen?   Continue reading “Somebody Stole 7 Milliseconds From the Federal Reserve”

A new Norwegian ship aims to counteract rough seas by making its own waves with internal water tanks.

The so-called “hotel ship” is being built for marine services provider Østensjø, and is designed to accommodate workers servicing offshore oil platforms. It’s 500 feet long and has room to house and entertain 800 workers, complete with a gym, sauna, two pools, and office space. And those accommodations should be comfortable no matter how high the seas get, thanks to U-shaped water tanks integrated into the ship’s hull that create waves to stabilize the vessel.   Continue reading “New Ship Makes Its Own Waves to Stay Stable”

KANSAS CITY — Thieves are using aluminum foil to block satellite dish transmissions in a scheme that allows them to run up huge bills on fake or stolen credit cards without being detected, Kansas City police said.

The scheme has been discovered at three businesses in Kansas City since the weekend, police announced Monday. The ruse has been reported in other parts of the country but this the first time it’s been reported here, said Sgt. Rob Rickett of the Kansas City police fraud section.   Continue reading “Credit card thieves use aluminum foil, Kansas City police say”

‘Bono’s positioning of the west as the saviour of Africa while failing to discuss the harm the G8 nations are doing has undermined campaigns for justice and accountability.’

It was bad enough in 2005. Then, at the G8 summit in Scotland, Bono and Bob Geldof heaped praise on Tony Blair and George Bush, who were still mired in the butchery they had initiated in Iraq. At one point Geldof appeared, literally and figuratively, to be sitting in Tony Blair’s lap. African activists accused them of drowning out a campaign for global justice with a campaign for charity.   Continue reading “Bono exposed as a complete fraud”

The Senate’s top tax writers have promised their colleagues 50 years worth of secrecy in exchange for suggestions on what deductions and credits to preserve in tax reform.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and the panel’s top Republican, Sen. Orrin Hatch (Utah), assured lawmakers that any submission they receive will be kept under lock and key by the committee and the National Archives until the end of 2064.   Continue reading “Tax writers promise 50 years of secrecy for senators’ suggestions”

“A lot of people in Washington like to talk about reducing the debt and deficits. Well if you really care about reducing the deficit, how about asking Wall Street speculators to pay their fair share? This bill will add a tax of a fraction of a percent on transactions made by the same Wall Street firms and stock traders who crashed our economy in 2008. This tax alone will generate up to $300 billion a year in revenue, stabilizing the deficit and allowing us to invest in the things that matter—education, roads and bridges, and health care for our seniors and veterans.”- Rep. Keith Ellison   Continue reading “The Inclusive Prosperity Act”

Former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, now with the Family Research Council, said that the House GOP’s massive food stamp cuts that could remove around 4 million people from the program next year was an act of Christian compassion.

While many churches and Christians organizations denounced the move, Blackwell told the Christian Post that there was “nothing more Christian” than kicking low-income families off food stamps. He referred to food aid as part of the “plantation of big government” and said that churches and charitable organization will replace such government assistance.   Continue reading “FRC: ‘Nothing More Christian’ Than Massive Food Stamp Cut”

On the night of 9th March 1945, 339 American bombers took off, heading for Tokyo. Their payload: incendiary bombs filled with a gelatinous mixture of coconut oil soap, aluminium naphthenate and gasoline, developed just a few years before at Harvard University. The B-29 flew in at low altitude, and dropped 690,000 pounds of napalm within an hour. Tokyo’s paper and wood houses were soon engulfed in flames. Explosives merely kill those within the range of the bomb’s impact. Incendiary weapons spread death more widely since their targets provide the fuel for their propagation.   Continue reading “Napalm’s death”

Ted Porter slips on the ice, lands on his rear and goes flying across the high Montana glacier on his back.

That’s how his story begins. Or maybe it starts before, when he failed to put ice-digging crampons on his boots.

Or does it really begin years earlier when Ted, growing up a Kansas City kid, decided he would rather climb mountains than play tennis?   Continue reading “KC native’s will to live defeats a Montana glacier”

The Electronic Intifada received this photo from a diplomatic source, said to show French diplomat Marion Castaing on the ground as she is manhandled by armed Israeli occupation soldiers.

The incident occurred in the village of Khirbet al-Makhul in the occupied West Bank earlier today when Israeli occupation forces violently prevented European diplomats from delivering humanitarian aid to Palestinians, as Reuters reported:   Continue reading “Photo: French aid convoy diplomat dragged on ground by Israeli soldiers”

At 9:15 on a Wednesday night Stewart Rahr struts into Catch, a thumping restaurant in New York’s Meatpacking District, with a lithe Taiwanese party promoter on one arm, an aspiring Brazilian actress on the other and his bodyguard, Big Tommy, trailing behind. Rahr wears his thinning hair greased back from his tangerine-tan forehead, a wide-open black button-down hanging untucked over his tight jeans. His custom, highlighter-yellow Swatch (with his face on the watch face) matches his “I Love Ibiza” phone case, both consistent with his bright trademark sunglasses. He’s promptly seated–for about 30 seconds.   Continue reading “Guns, Girls And Sex Tapes: The Unhinged, Hedonistic Saga Of Billionaire Stewart Rahr, ‘Number One King Of All Fun’”

Those defrauded by Bank of America aren’t allowed to file a collective complaint, thanks to a 2011 Supreme Court ruling.

In June, six former employees of Bank of America’s loan-modification department testified in court that since 2009, they had been instructed to lie to struggling homeowners, hide their financial documents, and push them into foreclosure. In the most egregious example, the employees said they were offered Target gift cards as a bonus for more foreclosures, which generated lucrative fees for the bank. The employees, who were in charge of implementing the government’s Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) at the bank, described the same deceptive practices across the country.   Continue reading “Homeowners vs. Big Bad Banks”

When a Texas man reportedly staggered into a local hospital, complaining of dizziness, staff made the rather obvious conclusion.

They gave him a Breathalyzer test.
