In the wake of a Bundy Ranch crisis sparked by a militarized federal land-grab effort in Nevada, it seems that the Department of Interior has set its sights on a new prize – this time targeting once protected Indian reservation land on Pine Ridge in South Dakota.

The Oglala Sioux and Lakota Sioux of the reservation have been told by the Federal Government that the National Parks Service will be taking land that comprises the South Unit of the Badlands National Park as a new ‘Tribal National Park’, only the wording in the bill clearly indicates that it will be a federally managed national park under the Department of Interior, giving mere lip service to its tribal title. The Congressional bill has already been written, and if passed through Congress, both tribal members and non tribal members will be stripped of their deeded land – at a price set by the federal government. If owners do not accept Washington’s offer (expected to be a meager one), the land can be acquired at no cost because the measure has waived all appraisal rights and stipulates that Washington can simply take Indian land by force under eminent domain’.   Continue reading “Feds Threatening ‘Third Wounded Knee’ with Eminent Domain Land Grab on Sioux Indian Reservation”

As police hunted for Justin Bourque in a wooded area in suburban Moncton, N.B., this week, one of the primary concerns officers dealt with was determining exactly what weapons he was carrying with him,

Based on a widely circulated image of the suspect, B.C.-based firearms instructor Rod Giltaca identified the two long guns Bourque was carrying as a semi-automatic centre-fire rifle — possibly an M14 or a cheaper knockoff version — and a pump-action shotgun. Both guns can be obtained legally and are commonly used by hunters, he said.   Continue reading “Moncton shooting: Justin Bourque was armed with rifle, shotgun”

Tyler Flockhart, currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Guelph, led the analysis, which combined all the known data about monarch populations and the factors that influence them.CBC News – by Emily Chung

The main cause of the monarch butterfly’s decline is the loss of milkweed — its food — in its U.S. breeding grounds, a new study has found. That all but confirms that the spread of genetically modified crops is indirectly killing the monarch.

This past winter, the number of monarch butterflies wintering in Mexico fell to its lowest since 1993, when records first started being kept, the World Wildlife Fund and Mexico’s Environment Department reported in January. That report blamed the loss of milkweed owing to genetically modified crops and urban sprawl in the U.S. and illegal logging in the butterflies’ Mexican wintering ground.   Continue reading “Monarch butterfly decline linked to spread of GM crops”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Residents of California’s largely rural, agrarian and politically conservative far northern counties long ago got used to feeling ignored in the state Capitol and out of sync with major urban areas.

The idea of forming their own state has been a topic among local secession dreamers for more than a century. Residents in two counties will have a chance to voice that sentiment next week.

Voters in Del Norte and Tehama, with a combined population of about 91,000, will decide June 3 on an advisory measure that asks each county’s board of supervisors to join a wider effort to form a 51st state named Jefferson.   Continue reading “Voters in California contemplate forming new state”

The head of a Canadian Jewish advocacy group is slamming the United Nations over its “knee-jerk” reaction to a video that human rights groups claim shows two unarmed Palestinian teenagers being shot by Israeli soldiers.

“Frankly, Israel really doesn’t need to take instructions from the UN about the proper followup to incidents involving fatalities,” Shimon Fogel, head of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, told CBC News. “There’s a long established process by which every such incident is thoroughly investigated by an arm’s length body within the national policing structure.”   Continue reading “UN accused of ‘knee-jerk’ reaction to Israel over video of Palestinian deaths”
