THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Forensic teams fanned out across the Netherlands on Saturday to collect material that will help positively identify the remains of victims killed in the downing of the Malaysia Airlines plane over Ukraine. Families and friends of the dead huddled to console one another at churches, schools and sports clubs across the nation.

Altius, a small soccer club on the edge of the central city of Hilversum, was typical of scenes that played out across the Netherlands. Cairo (AFP) – Gunmen who attacked an Egyptian border guards checkpoint on Saturday killed 21 soldiers, a military official told AFP, raising a previous death toll of 15 troops.

Ukraine’s government on Saturday accused pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine of removing bodies and trying to destroy evidence at the site where Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed after being brought down by a suspected surface-to-air missile.

Hopes for a proper investigation into the apparent shooting down of Malaysia Airlines MH17 – or even for some dignity in death for its 298 victims – faded on Saturday as chaos took hold at the disaster site in eastern Ukraine.

A small team of monitors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe were able to gain limited access to the site, but only under careful supervision by armed separatists. Journalists and local residents continued to roam the area of Thursday’s crash, while “experts” of unknown provenance moved bodies decomposing in the baking heat from fields to the roadside and used bags to collect body parts. An Oregon defense contractor has pleaded guilty to selling $10 million worth of phony parts for attack helicopters and military vehicles to the U.S. government, including a locknut that secures the rotor on the Kiowa attack helicopter.

Three more cases of plague were found in Colorado after a man was reported to have the deadliest form of the disease last week.

The man who got pneumonic plague is hospitalized. He is thought to have contracted the infection from his dog that was likely exposed to plague-infected fleas in eastern Adams County, near Denver. The three additional residents also had direct contact with the dog and had mild symptoms, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in a statement today. The two police officers who were involved with trying to arrest a Staten Island man—and killing him in the process when one put him in a chokehold—were taken off the streets. Officers Daniel Pantaleo, an eight-year veteran, and Justin Damico, who has been with the NYPD for four years,are now on desk duty.

Police, who say that Eric Garner, 43, was selling untaxed cigarettes, attempted to handcuff him around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday outside 202 Bay Street in Tompkinsville. A disturbing video obtained by the Daily News shows Garner arguing with the police: “I was just minding my own business. Every time you see me you want to mess with me. I’m tired of it. The bodies were dead for days before the flight and smelling of rot according to top military commander at the scene, which would be expected if they were actually from flight 370.
