First let’s be clear with the term apoptotic: It refers to apoptosis, the programmed activity of a cell’s self destruction or suicide that is common with normal cells to make way for new replacement cells.

What do you get for the man who has everything? A little more of it, apparently. Today, Mayor Michael Bloomberg will receive the Genesis Philanthropy Group’s inaugural Genesis Prize (so next year’s won’t be called the Exodus Prize) and the $1 million that comes with it. He is so honored for his “track record of outstanding public service and his role as one of the world’s greatest philanthropists,” according to the Group, which was founded by three Russian-Jewish billionaires to, in the words of chairman Alex Knaster, “inspire others to act to strengthen and preserve the Jewish community throughout the world.” The group hopes the award will eventually come to be known as the Jewish Nobel Prize, though it’s worth noting that one-fifth of Nobel Prize winners have been Jews.  Continue reading “Michael Bloomberg Just Won More Money Than You’ll Make in a Decade”

A “diplomatic embarrassment” has arisen following the refusal of Pope Francis I to meet with Israel’s prime minister at short notice. Benjamin Netanyahu’s office had already announced that a meeting would take place during his visit to Italy, reported Haaretz, but the pope has no plans in this regard.

There was considerable ballyhoo in yesterday’s Roll Call story about how much the National Rifle Association has spent in the Virginia governor’s race, but the bigger bucks are being spent by billionaire New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s super-PAC, according to Politico.

The soon-to-be ex-mayor will reportedly dump $1.1 million into the race to help perennial anti-gunner Terry McAuliffe – a Bill and Hillary Clinton loyalist – to defeat Republican Ken Cuccinelli, who has complained about the “out-of-state” money being spent in this campaign. Readers have often been using the term “neofeudalism” to describe the outlines of the new economic order, in which the uber wealthy and a thin cadre of their advisors, managers, and other elite professionals do well, with a network of less lofty managers helping oversee and orchestrate the provision of services to the broad base of the public, and they struggle to eke out a meager existence.

Debt appears to be the “one ring that rules them all” of this emerging order. Homeless people will be able to move into shipping containers in a former scrap metal yard in a bid to tackle a city’s housing shortage.

The converted containers will provide temporary homes for a period of five years for 36 men and women with a history of homelessness.
