The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a 5.3 magnitude earthquake off the coast of northern California.

The USGS says the quake was centered in the Pacific Ocean, about 70 miles west of Ferndale, California, and struck about 4:16 a.m. PST Thursday. CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Huge flames ripped through historic buildings in the picturesque western Wyoming town of Dubois as firefighters contended with subzero temperatures that froze their hoses and other equipment.

First in importance, tradition says, is the inclusion of black-eyed peas in your New Year’s Day menu. The most widely told story says that during the Civil War, black-eyed peas were a prevalent crop in the South. A San Francisco based, synthetic biohacker group has made hundreds of headlines for creating cheese without the use of cows. Young biohackerspace people from BioCurious and CounterCultureLabs make up the group.

They beat out 243 other groups to take first place at this year’s iGEM “jamboree” competition. iGEM stands for international genetically engineered machine.The winner’s group fundraiser brought nearly $40,000 from donors – over double the amount they needed. (Bloomberg) — Developer Larry Silverstein sold $1.6 billion of tax-exempt bonds to finance the construction of 3 World Trade Center, the largest-ever unrated deal in the municipal market.
