Despite a recent report indicating that the vast majority of the Central American families who illegally entered the U.S. last year seeking asylum failed to appear in court, the Obama administration says it is further reducing family detention.

“I have reached the conclusion that we must make substantial changes in our detention practices with respect to families with children,” Department of Homeland Security Sec. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and international creditors have failed to reach a common ground on tax and reform proposals, which adds more doubts over the country’s chances of averting an imminent debt default.

The lack of concrete proposals coming from the Greek side, according to representatives of the lending institutions, is the main stumbling block in its talks with the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In a major win for the Obama administration, the Supreme Court held in a 6-3 decision that the Affordable Care Act authorized federal tax credits for eligible Americans living not only in states with their own exchanges but also in the 34 states with federal exchanges.

Gov. Larry Hogan will pursue action to stop the state from issuing license plates bearing images of the Confederate battle flag, aides said Tuesday, as momentum seemed to swing decisively against the controversial symbol of a divided America.

Hogan, a Republican, joined the Democratic governor of Virginia in taking steps toward ridding their states of the Sons of Confederate Veterans plates on a day that retail giants Amazon, eBay and Sears followed Wal-Mart in banning Confederate flag merchandise. PANGUITCH, Utah – Commissioners in Garfield County have declared a state of emergency, saying a decline in school enrollment in rural communities has put the future of those cities at risk.

Charles Edelen is now charged with aggravated battery, criminal recklessness and domestic battery.

The federal government is considering filing federal hate crime charges against the man suspected of the deadly shooting at a black church in South Carolina. The suspect already faces nine counts of murder and could face the death penalty in state court.

Law enforcement officials said the crimes committed by Dylann Roof, 21, during the shooting at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston on June 17 were “so horrific and racially motivated” that the FBI and the Justice Department were “obligated to address the incident as a hate crime,” according to The New York Times.   Continue reading “South Carolina church shooter could face federal hate crime charges”

The military has taken over the Westport High School parking lot and it is currently filled with military vehicles.

Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on Wednesday apologized for the deadly 2013 attack at a hearing before a U.S. judge formally sentenced him to death for killing four people and injuring 264 in the bombing and its aftermath.
