The Justice Department has been secretly gathering and storing hundreds of millions of records about motorists in an effort to build a national database that tracks the movement of vehicles across the country, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.
The newspaper said the main aim of the license plate tracking program run by the Drug Enforcement Administration was to seize automobiles, money and other assets to fight drug trafficking, according to one government document. The deputy head of the Russian Central Bank directorate in the Amur region of the country has shot dead three people before turning the gun on himself, Russian independent news service Interfax reports.
The killer, named in Russian media as Vladimir Levkin, is alleged to have shot two women and a man in an office on the first floor of the regional Central Bank in the city of Blagoveshchensk. The White House is embarking on a public relations pitch to raise awareness about President Obama’s executive amnesty, which the administration claims will provide a boost to the economy and have no negative impact on American workers — a claim which Obama himself has disputed in the past.
To help sell Obama’s unilateral action, which he announced in November, the White House has published a U.S. map which shows how much economic output will increase for each state due to amnesty. The White House said Monday that President Obama’s executive actions on immigration could boost California’s economy by as much as $27.5 billion.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A historic New Orleans cemetery that may have started New Orleans’ tradition of above-ground crypts will soon be off-limits to tourists on their own because of repeated vandalism among the tombs, the Roman Catholic archdiocese that owns the property has announced.
Starting in March, entry to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 and its labyrinth of mausoleums will be restricted to the relatives of the dead buried there and to tourists whose guide is registered with the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, has been released from the hospital following surgery on his right eye Monday in an attempt to fully recover his vision after a freak exercising accident.
Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson said the three-and-a-half hour surgery was successful in removing a blood clot in Reid’s right eye, additional blood from the front of his right eye, and repairing the orbital bones in his right brow, temple and cheek. He was under full anesthesia and doctors have said they are optimistic he will regain vision in his right eye that was lost following the accident, although there is no definitive verdict yet.
