Stephen Hawking, one of the world’s greatest minds, believes that genetically modified viruses are one of the greatest threats to mankind. When speaking to the Radio Times before his BBC Reith Lecture, Professor Hawking stated, “We face a number of threats: nuclear war, global warming and genetically engineered viruses.”

The fact that genetically modified viruses were ranked among the likes of nuclear war by one of the brightest individuals in the world should be very alarming. The term “genetically modified viruses” encompasses many different things. In addition to the potential for some of history’s most devastating viruses to be transformed into weapons of mass destruction, there is also an increasing presence of GM viral strains in vaccines. A global agreement to combat climate change by shifting the world economy away from fossil fuels will take force next month after passing a threshold for ratification on Wednesday with support from European nations.

Support for the Paris Agreement has widened to nations representing 56.75 percent of world greenhouse gas emissions, above the 55 percent needed for implementation, a U.N. website showed. California — In a refreshing and unfortunately rare instance of reasonableness in policy, California Governor Jerry Brown recently signed into law a piece of legislation requiring police to secure an actual conviction before stealing people’s stuff in drug-related offenses.

There is a clear divide among the states. Some are very welcoming and eager to take in Syrian refugees. While others are resistant and seek to opt out of the program design to resettle the refugees. So a judge has decided which states are right and which are wrong.

States that refuse to help resettle Syrian refugees are guilty of illegal discrimination, a federal appeals court ruled Monday, delivering a judicial rebuke to GOP vice presidential nominee Mike Pence, who as Indiana’s governor had tried to halt Syrian resettlement.

A new study reveals Fortune 500 companies are holding nearly $2.5 trillion in accumulated profits offshore to pay less tax. Top is Apple which since 2009 funneled $214.9 billion to tax havens and would owe $65.4 billion if the profits returned to the US.

The report was published just weeks after a European investigation concluded Ireland provided Apple with a favorable tax rate which allowed the company to pay one percent on EU profits in 2003 down to 0.005 percent in 2014. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — People boarded up beach homes, schools closed and officials ordered evacuations along the East Coast on Wednesday as Hurricane Matthew tore through the Bahamas and took aim at Florida, where the governor urged coastal residents to “leave now” if they were able.

Matthew was a dangerous and life-threatening Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 120 mph, and it was expected to be very near Florida’s Atlantic coast by Thursday evening. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A former Albuquerque police officer standing trial on a murder charge in the on-duty shooting death of a homeless camper told jurors he had concerns about being in the dark about what prosecutors have described as a botched plan to take the man into custody.

But those concerns didn’t stop SWAT Officer Dominique Perez from following his sergeant’s request for him to join other officers in a hillside standoff. CHICAGO (CN) — A woman claims in federal court that prison guards beat her glaucomic ex-husband while his limbs were cuffed and stuffed paper down his throat until he suffocated and died.

On September 22 we reported that the rusty-patched bumblebee was proposed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to be listed as an endangered species. This is a wake-up call to the problem of habitat destruction and pesticide use – particularly neonicotinoid pesticides – as this native bee is the first in the continental U.S. to be formally proposed for endangered species listing. A new report presented by Gil Troy of Mcgill University in Canada, shows that 50% of donations to Secretary Clinton’s campaign come from Jewish contributors. The study also found that 25% of donations to the Republican Party also come from Jewish donors.
