TOKYO (Reuters) – A panel of experts advising Japan’s government on a disposal method for radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant on Friday recommended releasing it into the ocean, a move likely to alarm neighboring countries.
The panel under the industry ministry came to the conclusion after narrowing the choice to either releasing the contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean or letting it evaporate – and opted for the former. Defense Secretary Mark Esper has instructed the Pentagon to ready military housing for 1,000 people as it prepares to quarantine those who may have the new coronavirus.
“Earlier today, we have learned that Defense Secretary Mark Esper approved a request from the Department of Health and Human Services to provide DOD housing support for up to 1,000 people who may need to be quarantined as they travel back to the United States and may have been in places where they could’ve been exposed to the coronavirus,” said CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr. After a period of progress and decline, Statista’s Niall McCarthy notes that the U.S. homeless population has increased slightly by three percent according to a report from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. It now stands at 567,715 with 63 percent of that total living in sheltered accommodation. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) recently released a survey showing an increase in antisemitic violence, hate crimes and negative stereotypes about Jews in the United States.
Following the report, the ADL decided to launch an online tracker to provide a compiled and updated list of antisemitic incidents in the country. The tracker allows users to have access to the most recent information available on acts of hate against Jews, including vandalism, harassment and assault.
