Turkey said on Monday its military hit dozens of Syrian government targets after five Turkish soldiers were killed by shelling in Idlib in northwest Syria, where fighting threatens to test ties between Ankara and Moscow.

In 1916, as World War I raged on, a British diplomat, Mark Sykes, met with his French counterpart from the Quai d’Orsay, Monsieur Picot, and signed an agreement to partition the Ottoman Empire once victory was achieved.

The heart of the Mideast – Palestine, Syria and Iraq – was divided between Britain and France. Italy and Russia were offered other Ottoman lands: southern Turkey was promised to Italy and Constantinople to Russia. A professor at St. John’s College, Oxford University, just taught student protesters an invaluable lesson in personal sacrifice.

According to the school newspaper, Oxford students have been occupying St. John’s College since Wednesday in protest of the school’s investments in fossil fuels. Dozens of students have reportedly set up camp in the front quad with signs and banners, vowing to remain until their demands are met. Militants blew up a gas pipeline between Israel and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula on Sunday night, though supply is reportedly unaffected.

At least six masked militants planted explosives under a pipeline in the town of Bir al-Abd west of Sinai’s provincial capital al-Arish, security sources told Israel’s Haaretz newspaper. The Palestinian Authority has cut all ties with Israel and the US after rejecting Donald Trump’s Middle East peace plan.
