Beginning Monday, deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office along with law enforcement agencies throughout Oregon will use federally funded overtime to educate the public about safety belt and child seat laws, including a law passed in 2017 increasing safety for children under age two.

Sergeant Mark Norris of DCSO said “These grant dollars allow us to educate the public in hopes of reducing injury or fatal car crashes”. Norris said the goal is not to write citations, but to gain compliance with the law and ensure the safety of the motoring public in Douglas County. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Chicago recently stopped several shipments containing counterfeit currencies totaling $685,000 from China, the agency announced on May 18.

The shipments arrived at Chicago’s International Mail Facility (IMF) between May 15 and 17, and were destined for cities in several states including Illinois, Indiana, New York, and Kentucky. Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday ordered all government entities in the state, including school districts, to lift mask mandates by week’s end, though existing guidelines for face-coverings in schools may remain in effect through June 4.

Ohio recorded more than 25,000 new vaccinations last Friday, a number not seen in three weeks. It came two days after the state announced a major incentive: the potential for five vaccinated residents to win $1 million.

According to state data, Ohio administered more than 25,400 COVID-19 vaccines on May 14 — two days after Gov. Mike DeWine announced the program during a televised address the evening of May 12. It was the highest number of shots the state had administered in three weeks, when residents received 28,000 shots on April 23. On Monday, disgraced former Seminole County tax collector Joel Greenberg, 37, pleaded guilty to a half-dozen charges including sex trafficking of a child. In his plea, he agreed to cooperate with federal investigators to give them information on others involved in the scheme which could include Republican congressman, Matt Gaetz, according to reports.

Greenberg has been under fire since last June when he was arrested on federal stalking charges. He allegedly stalked opponents, and made fake social media accounts in order to start rumors about his political opponent and paint the victim as a white supremacist.
