Deputies: Homeowner arrested after fatally shooting intruder in shower

KOMO News 4

BELFAIR, Wash. (KOMO) – A homeowner was arrested Saturday morning after he shot and killed an intruder who was taking a shower in his home, Mason County sheriff’s deputies said.

Mason County Coroner Wes Stockwell identified the man who was killed as Nathaniel Joseph Rosa, 31, of Bothell.

The homeowner owns two pieces of property that sit next to each other along East Trails Road. One has a house that he lives in. He runs an internet-based business out of a home on the other piece of property, which is where the shooting occurred, deputies said.

The deadly confrontation happened just before 8 a.m. Saturday when the owner arrived to do some work for his business, deputies said. He noticed a window screen out in the yard and someone had forced open the front door.

The man went inside and confronted another man he found in his shower, deputies said. The homeowner left after the two exchanged words.

“He returned home, retrieved a firearm, came back over to the residence and fired multiple rounds into the shower … killing the intruder,” said Mason County Sheriff’s Lt. Travis Adams.

The homeowner called 911 and told dispatchers that he had just shot and killed an intruder, Adams said.

It’s not clear how long Rosa had been inside the home, but detectives don’t believe the homeowner gave him any warnings before he fired his gun, they said.

Deputies later arrested the homeowner for second-degree murder. They believe he had ample time to call for help when he went back home.

“Certainly he had an opportunity to call law enforcement at that time,” Adams said. “And we’ve contacted our local prosecutor, explained the circumstances to him, and he agrees that second-degree murder was an appropriate charge in this case.”

Investigators said the homeowner is cooperating with detectives.

Detectives don’t believe Rosa was armed when he was killed, they said.

  1. Should of let the “Nathaniel Joseph Rosa” bleed out completely in the shower and then taken Mr Rosa on a ride down to the county land fill.

Rosa, thats a Irish name, ain’t it ?

any brown people that feel they have some sort of right to forcefully enter my property and wash there ass in my shower “beware,” I Don’t Call 911

  2. If this had been the home owner answering the door for a pig and the pig shot the home owner, there would be no charges, it would have been declared a justifiable shooting, noting to see here. Now this homeowner is looking at having his life ruined because a criminal broke into his house and he did what any of us would have done upon finding a stranger in our home, shot him dead. Complete BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. There is more to the story that isn’t being released. I am all for using lethal force when in imminent danger but this was meditated. He walked in talked to the guy went back to his other house came back to the rental property and opened fire on an unarmed man in the shower. Im guessing this guy was drunk or in a different state of mind. Maybe he was plowing the neighbors wife who knows. But Nate was a good guy according to my bro who was friends with him. He was a teachers aide. Not some crazy violent criminal. I mean if you have time to walk out and go from house to house why not just call the cops after the first confrontation. If he was packing from the first incident and shot him at first sight I would be all with you guys. Or if nate broke in and was armed and the owner saw that and shot I would be okay with it. Rosa seems to be like a hispanic name but he definitely does look the part. Just my two pennies 🙂 I love the 2nd and my steel but anyone that knows how to handle firearms wouldn’t have reacted like this.

Only pigs are ‘allowed’ to do that.

However, it’s highly unlikely the guy in the shower was armed.

“The homeowner called 911 and told dispatchers that he had just shot and killed an intruder…”

Since he was stupid enough to call the pigs anyway, he could EASILY have held the guy at gunpoint until they arrived… to ‘help’.

  5. Should have retrieved 2 weapons. The one to do the shooting and the other to place in the hand (Throw-down) of the intruder.

Of course, that would be murder. But it’s nothing for a cop to it to be “justifiable”. If we do it, we’re toast.
