The United States State Department is telling all nonessential embassy employees in Libya to get out now. Also travel warnings have been issued telling Americans not to go to Libya and that if you are an American already in Libya you need to leave as soon as possible.
Libya leader, Moammar Gadhafi has declared war on his own people, labeling them as traitors. Gadhafi has ruled Libya since 1969. He has declared that his forces will fight to the last man and the last bullet.
Saif Al-Islam Gadhafi, one of Pres. Gadhafi’s sons went on state TV Sunday to offer “Radical democratic reforms” but only if the uprisings stopped. Saif Al-Islam said, “We are not Egypt, we are not Tunisia, we will have weapons, everyone has access to weapons. Instead of crying over 84 killed people, we’ll be crying over thousands. Blood will flow, rivers of blood in all the cities of Libya.”
Libya second largest city, Benghazi, has reportedly fallen to the protesters. Meanwhile fighter jets have opened up on crowds in Tripoli, Libya’s capital city. Other reports say Libya’s security headquarters have been set on fire.
It is reported that pro government demonstrators have also taken to the streets, though there have been reports of some high ranking defections. Libya’s ambassador to the Arab Leagues stepped down, as did the Justice Minister, and Libya’s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations is publicly accusing Gadhafi of genocide.
Two Libyan jets and one helicopter have reportedly landed in Malta where it is unconfirmed that the pilots are asking for asylum.
