It’s a story that broke almost a year ago, yet garnered very little media coverage. In fact, it took a year and a book (August 2015) later to get the attention of a US Representative. Even that type of recognition hasn’t ignited TV screens or mainstream media outlets.
Rep Bill Posey (R-FL) spoke before the House requesting an investigation into the allegations made by vaccine whistleblower CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) employee Dr. William Thompson.
Thompson claims that he and CDC colleagues chose to omit vital information connecting MMR (Measles Mumps Rubella) vaccinations with autism in African American male children. The “senior scientist in the vaccine safety division at the CDC” filed for the official status of whistleblower in accordance with the Federal Whistleblower Protection Act so he could protect his job at the CDC.
Yet, even in the wake of admitting that the CDC study group deliberately omitted and destroyed documentation that linked the MMR vaccination and autism, Dr. Thompson doesn’t appear to be on anyone’s radar.
That’s because there has been a miniscule amount of media coverage for a story that should have sent the medical community into a tailspin and Merck, the MMR vaccine manufacturer, into high defense.
The Internet chatter over why this confession isn’t being spotlighted is that the CDC’s credibility would come under harsh scrutiny. In fact, every vaccine safety study conducted by the CDC would be called into question. And, suspicion wouldn’t stop there. It could literally open a can of worms and turn public scrutiny and questioning on every study the CDC ever conducted.
Little Coverage by Mainstream Media
The closest to mainstream media coverage came from Forbes and CNN’s reader-contribution blog “iReport” that bears the disclaimer that CNN doesn’t verify the blog reports (1).
On August 6, 2015, an article appeared in Forbes that examines the claims made by Thompson. In response to the reporter’s inquiry, the CDC stated that the “CDC is aware that employee Dr. William Thompson has raised concerns regarding an article he co-authored that was published in 2004 in Pediatrics. Consistent with the CDC’s existing policies and procedures, the agency, through its Office of the Associate Director for Science (ADS), and in coordination with the HHS (Health and Human Services) Office of Research Integrity, is reviewing these concerns. The agency will provide further information once the review is completed” (2).
The Forbes article quotes David Gorski as an authoritative debunker; however, according to Age of Autism, Gorski is known to be working on “Sanofi-Aventis – the world’s largest vaccine maker” sponsored research through “his employer Wayne State University.” Age of Autism reports that Gorski is currently working on a “clinical trial of one of the company’s [Sanofi-Aventis] drugs.” That drug ironically is being tested to see if can also be used for the treatment of autism (3).
According to Dr. Thompson, the CDC study group for MMR safety was formed after Dr. Daniel Wakefield published his findings that linked MMR and autism in vaccinated children. The group’s mission was to investigate whether there was any validity to Dr. Wakefield’s 1998 study (4).
In 1998, Wakefield’s study that made the connection between MMR vaccinations and the development of autism in vaccinated children was published in the British medical journal, The Lancet, but in 2010, Wakefield’s study was retracted from the journal (5).
This came after a 2004 article in the Sunday Times questioned Wakefield’s integrity and validity of his study. The report prompted an inquiry by the British General Medical Council (GMC) and subsequently, the GMC revoked Wakefield’s medical license (6).
In a statement, Dr. Thompson said, “I regret that my coauthors and I omitted statistically significant information in our 2004 article published in the journal Pediatrics. The omitted data suggested that African American males who received the MMR vaccine before age 36 months were at increased risk for autism. Decisions were made regarding which findings to report after the data were collected, and I believe that the final study protocol was not followed” (7).
At the time “Dr. Thompson brought the misconduct to the attention of Dr. Julie Gerberding, the CDC Director at the material time, despite which the misconduct was allowed to continue and continues to this day.”
Gerberding resigned from the CDC in 2009 and become “president of Merck’s vaccines division” (8). In 2014, she was promoted to Merck’s Executive Vice President for Strategic Communications, Global Public Policy and Population Health (9).
Brian S Hooker Recreates Thompson CDC Data Set
Dr. Brian S Hooker undertook his own study stating the “purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the age at which children got their first Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine on autism incidence. This is a reanalysis of the data set, obtained from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC), used for the Destefano et al. 2004 publication on the timing of the first MMR vaccine and autism diagnoses.”
Hooker’s conclusion was that, “The present study provides new epidemiologic evidence showing that African American males receiving the MMR vaccine prior to 24 months of age or 36 months of age are more likely to receive an autism diagnosis.”
Although the Translational Neurodegeneration (open access, peer-review journal) retracted Dr. Brian S Hooker’s August 2014 article on the study he conducted (10), it still retains the full article on its website for anyone to read (11).
In October 2014, a formal complaint was filed with the CDC and US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) by Dr. Thompson, Dr. Brian Hooker Ph.D and Dr. Andrew Wakefield MB.BS concerning the 2004 CDC study.
In the book, “Vaccine Whistleblower” published in August 2015, Thompson is quoted, “Senior people just do completely unethical, vile things and no one holds them accountable” (12).
The CDC website states, “There is no link between vaccines and autism” (13). In the wake of Thompson’s claims, the CDC review is underway and mainstream media seems to be ignoring Thompson’s allegations.
