A gauge of U.S. manufacturing showed the lowest reading in more than 10 years in September as exports dived amid the escalated trade war.

The U.S. manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index from the Institute for Supply Management came in at 47.8% in September, the lowest since June 2009, marking the second consecutive month of contraction. Business groups are continuing to push Congress to pass President Trump’s trade deal to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), despite Democrats’ attention turning toward impeachment.

Overdrive

An early-season winter storm that dumped more than four feet of snow in some parts of the Pacific Northwest prompted Montana Gov. Steve Bullock to declare a state of emergency, suspending hours of service regulations for truck drivers assisting in recovery efforts.

Portions of Montana Highway 213, Montana Highway 49 and U.S. Highway 89 near Glacier National Park and the Canadian border remain closed Monday afternoon. An umbrella group for D.C. police unions rented space at President Trump’s hotel for its annual holiday party — and now faces sharp criticism from some of its own members, who object to the high cost and the forced association with the Trump brand.

The Fraternal Order of Police lodge for the District, which advocates and organizes social events for 11,000 local law enforcement officers, reserved Trump International Hotel for a night in early December. “A night of celebration surrounded by elegance,” the lodge said. Washington, D.C. — Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided a government agnecy last week to execute a search warrant looking for evidence of a fentanyl drug ring.
