Standing on the front steps of First Congregational Church of Oakland late last month, Nichola Torbett issued a declaration.
“We can no longer tolerate the trauma inflicted on our communities by policing,” Torbett, a white church volunteer, said in front of churchgoers who held photos of African Americans shot dead by law enforcement. The church, she promised, would never call the cops again in nearly every circumstance. Dozens of members had agreed to do the same.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Calls for President Trump to commute the sentence of a man who was recently sent back to prison after he was released in 2016 have crossed the political spectrum and call attention to “mandatory minimum” prison sentences.
Matthew Charles had served 21 years of a 35-year sentence for selling crack to a police informant in the 1990’s before he was released under reduced sentences of “mandatory minimum” sentences by the Obama Administration. The right wing Jewish lobby financier Sheldon Adelson has pumped $30 million into the Republican Party’s “Congressional Leadership Fund” to help keep that party in control of the US Congress—so that President Donald Trump will keep up his slavishly pro-Israel foreign policy.
According to a report in Politico, casino mogul Adelson—who made his money out of a casino business empire which would be illegal in the Jewish ethnostate—cut a $30 million check after House Speaker Paul Ryan flew to Las Vegas to meet with the billionaire at his Venetian Hotel. San Diego parents pulled their kids from school and rallied outside the district’s headquarters Tuesday, expressing anger and frustration over a sex-ed curriculum they allege is completely inappropriate for their young children.
The sixth grade curriculum includes lessons on gender identity, birth control, the stages of sex, STDs, HIV and pregnancy. Parents are calling the material “too much, too soon” and age-inappropriate while San Diego officials defend the curriculum by arguing that the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention supports the lesson plans, CBS News 8 reported. U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis vowed on Tuesday that American ships will continue to confront China over its militarization of man-made islands in the South China Sea, where Beijing has established an extensive military presence despite its promise not to do so.
Mattis said that U.S. forces are maintaining a “steady drumbeat” of naval operations around the disputed Spratly islands, adding that “only one country” seems to be bothered by the maneuvers. An off-duty San Antonio Police Office was shot six times after a road rage incident turned into a shootout in the parking lot of a gentleman’s sports club on Tuesday, according to the city’s police chief.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said at a news conference the off-duty officer and a 25-year-old driver pulled into the parking lot of the Allstars Gentleman’s Sportsclub off Interstate 10 after the motorist accused the officer of cutting him off. The driver then pulled out a gun and started shooting, hitting the officer six times in the lower-torso. Because I had forgotten to remove my belt before going through a scanner, he explained, I must undergo an “enhanced patdown.” I told him that if he jammed his hand into my groin, I’d file a formal complaint. So he summoned his supervisor to keep an eye on the proceedings.
I thought of this exchange last week when the New York Times revealed that the Transportation Security Administration has created a secret watchlist for troublesome passengers. The TSA justified the list by saying that its screeners were assaulted 34 times last year, but did not release any details about the alleged assaults.
The reported killing of Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko on Tuesday in Kiev was actually a ruse played by the Ukrainian law enforcement to prevent a planned hit, the Ukrainian authorities said.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Islamic State militants, including two suicide bombers, dressed in military uniforms and riding in two armored vehicles launched a surprise attack on the Interior Ministry in Kabul on Wednesday but Afghan forces managed to repel the assault, leaving all the attackers dead.
It was a rare victory for Afghan security forces, who have struggled to secure the capital in recent months amid relentless attacks by the Taliban and the IS affiliate in Afghanistan. GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Gaza’s Hamas rulers said Wednesday they had agreed to a cease-fire with Israel to end the largest flare-up of violence between the sides since a 2014 war. Khalil al-Hayya, a senior Hamas official, said Egyptian mediators intervened “after the resistance succeeded in warding off the aggression.” He said militant groups in Gaza will commit to the cease-fire as long as Israel does. When this publically financed garbage first came out the box many were skeptical to say the least, at least I was. I knew this technology was way too early to become in any way shape or form safe. Our roads were not adequately prepared to deal with this fantasy type of transportation mode called autonomous driving. No way in the world could our current infrastructure adequately deal with hands off driving safety No way, simple as that.
What should have been dealt with first was to re-think America’s roads, and how to include imbedded sensors within the road itself before any of this fantasy land BS hit the markets. Now, just as many fantasy publicly financed boondoggles before this, billions have been simply thrown out of the autonomous window.
