SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A respected chemist famed for dusting off a decades-old recipe for the psychedelic drug ecstasy has died.

Alexander Shulgin died Monday at his Northern California home at the age of 88.

It was a fine summer day…

Well, it would be fine, if it weren’t for all those big yellow dandelions cropping up in the lawn.  My husband, Don, and I tried to eliminate them from our view, but with no success.  They held steadfast.  I was reluctant to use chemicals, thinking of possible harm to our feathered friends who visited the various bird-feeders and bird-houses which Don had built and placed around our yard.   Continue reading “The Color Yellow”

A humungous Earth-like planet found by US astronomers has changed the perception of planet formation. A rocky world found by Kepler space observatory should by rights have become a giant ball of gas, but has remained a planet for billions of years.

The newly discovered Kepler-10c planet has been dubbed ‘Mega-Earth’ thanks to its diameter of 29,000 kilometers and an estimated weight 17 times greater than Earth, which has a diameter of 12,742 kilometers. President Obama has announced a plan to invest $1 billion in stepping up its military presence in Eastern Europe amid the Ukrainian crisis. The White House will send more troops and equipment to the region to “reaffirm” its commitment to NATO allies.

Speaking at a news conference in Warsaw, Obama said America was stepping up its partnership with countries in Eastern Europe with a view to bolstering security. A new analysis suggests that more fatalities than originally reported may have resulted from faulty ignition switches used by General Motors in millions of cars sold during the last decade.

A United Nations human rights body has criticized the Tel Aviv regime for torturing Palestinian children, saying the Israeli military frequently uses them as human shields in its operations.

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child said on Thursday Palestinian children in the occupied West Bank and blockaded Gaza Strip are normally not allowed to have their birth registered, and are denied access to health care, decent schooling as well as safe drinking water. 

“Palestinian children arrested by (Israeli) military and police are systematically subject to degrading treatment, and often to acts of torture, are interrogated in Hebrew, a language they did not understand, and sign confessions in Hebrew in order to be released,” it said in a report. Karl Popper, an Austrian philosopher and economics professor said a few things that strike me as true, one of them is the statement: Always remember that it is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood. The other is this: You can choose whatever name you like for the two types of government.
