We’ve covered for a while now how Uber — the mobile phone-enabled car/taxi ordering service — has run up against a bunch of obsolete laws in various cities, often leading to bizarre rebuttals from municipal officials. Uber quickly realized that each ridiculous response from a city government was something of a marketing opportunity to introduce itself to new cities. You would think, by now, city officials would learn that the proper thing to do is figure out how to work with Uber to provide better transportation for their citizenry, rather than immediately bowing to demands from taxi/limo companies who fear potential competition. President Barack Obama, the Democrats, and plenty of Republicans in Congress, would like it if you’d spend the next few weeks talking about the Ukraine, Syria, Iran, Fukushima or gun control. That’s because when you are talking about those issues, you’re not talking about the country’s financial situation.
Peter Schiff presents the real economic numbers that you are not being told about, like year over year GDP numbers are down from 2.8% to 1.9% how is this to be considered a real recovery? Once upon a time I had an excellent history teacher, who has made a lasting impact on how I view the world. “It’s about the dates,” he taught us; “Be sure to remember the dates, and you’ll have the key to history.” You see, dates are important because most of the important historical events are, in fact, anniversaries. There is a hackneyed phrase that history does not repeat—it rhymes; but it would be a lot closer to truth to say that history has a rhythm—a rhythm based largely on multiples of the annual cycle. WASHINGTON (AP) — In a sudden reprise of Cold War sensibilities, the U.S. and its allies are weighing sanctions on Moscow and whether to bolster defenses in Europe in response to Russia’s military advances on Ukraine. Secretary of State John Kerry, soon on his way to Ukraine’s capital, said world leaders “are prepared to go to the hilt in order to isolate Russia with respect to this invasion.”
Much as when superpower tensions ruled world affairs, missile defense systems and troop levels in Europe have again become urgent questions in Washington and beyond, a renewed reality that may force President Barack Obama’s administration to give up its intended foreign policy shift to Asia indefinitely. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea fired two short-range missiles into the sea Monday in the second such launch in less than a week, amid ongoing annual military exercises between Seoul and Washington, South Korean officials said.
The launches appear to be a continuation of North Korea’s protest of the drills it calls a preparation for an attack, and to test the country’s weapons systems. They followed South Korea’s announcement that North Korea last Thursday fired four short-range Scud missiles with a range of more than 200 kilometers (about 125 miles) into the North’s eastern waters.
