Woman claims officer hit her on the head during SXSW

KVUE – by HEATHER KOVAR

AUSTIN — Margaret Woodbury sent KVUE pictures of her head, days after she says a police officer hit her with a baton while she attended SXSW. Police at the scene said she was not hit. The woman, who is a nurse from San Antonio, filed a notary signed complaint with the police monitor.

Woodbury says around 1 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, she and her fiancé and two other friends were walking along Trinity Street to their car when they saw a woman standing on the street crying.

Woodbury says when she tried to help the woman, she got upset and pushed her.

“Then I pushed her back. Then she fell on the floor, and the police officer came from behind and hit me,” said Woodbury.

She says the officer used a baton and hit her so hard it gave her a concussion.

“I blacked out and fell to the ground, and when I came to, they were pulling me up and putting me in zip ties,” said Woodbury.

The police report tells a different story, saying “Margaret was injured during the fight from a kick by Amri to Margaret’s head, causing pain.”

Police arrested the intoxicated woman, Amri Estrada. She’s now charged with assault with injury.

There  are at least two halo cameras in plain sight of where the incident happened. Both Woodbury and a witness tell KVUE they think these cameras will back their statements.

The woman who took pictures of Woodbury while police were taking her information also told KVUE she watched an officer strike Woodbury in the forehead with a baton. However, Woodbury says the officer who hit her denied on scene to other officers what had happened.

Police Monitor Margo Frasier confirms a report has been filed with her office.

“What we try to tell people when they come in to us, we are going to take you seriously, so don’t embellish,” said Frasier.

She can’t comment about the case, but says it has been delivered to internal affairs.

“It doesn’t need to be happening, it shouldn’t happen again,” said Woodbury.

Frasier says the police monitor gets about 700 reports a year, and each must be notarized.

If it’s revealed someone files a false report, the police department can file criminal charges.

  1. OK, its made the news, now what?
    The most likely outcome:
Cop gets “rewarded” with Paid Leave (Holiday). If he is lucky enough, he will receive a cash “Bonus” to turbo charge his time off.
All the training where they shoot normal civilians is paying off.
The new “Bonus” system that has obviously been enacted, is to transition the police into accepting the cognitive dissonance associated with mobbing and killing a homeless man, or clobbering senseless a beautiful young woman.
