MANHATTAN — Investigators believe the motorman at the controls in the deadly Metro-North Railroad derailment in the Bronx Sunday dozed off for a few fateful moments and woke up too late to stop the speeding train from hurtling off the tracks, DNAinfo New York has learned.

Veteran engineer William Rockefeller all but admitted he was falling asleep as the train came roaring to a curved section of track north of Spuyten Duyvil in statements made shortly after four people were killed and dozens were injured in the wreck, sources said.   Continue reading “William Rockefeller, Metro-North Engineer, Fell Asleep During Fatal Train Derailment: Report”

Noth Korea Detained AmericanAOL –  by FOSTER KLUG and HYUNG-JIN KIM

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – Six decades before he went to North Korea as a curious tourist, Merrill Newman supervised a group of South Korean guerrillas during the Korean War who were perhaps the most hated and feared fighters in the North, former members of the group say.

Some of those guerrillas, interviewed this week by The Associated Press, remember Newman as a handsome, thin American lieutenant who got them rice, clothes and weapons during the later stages of the 1950-53 war, but largely left the fighting to them.   Continue reading “US Vet Detained in N Korea Oversaw Guerrilla Group”

WASHINGTON — A Wisconsin man who, for one minute, took part in an Anonymous-sponsored effort to overwhelm the website of Koch Industries has been sentenced to two years probation and ordered to pay the company $183,000.

Eric J. Rosol, a 38-year-old truck driver from Black Creek, Wis., was sentenced on Monday in federal court in Wichita, Kan., where Koch Industries is headquartered. He pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of accessing a protected computer, admitting that he used a software called Low Orbit Ion Cannon Code to participate in a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on Kochind.com for approximately one minute back in 2011. As a result of the attack, the website was down for about 15 minutes.   Continue reading “Loading Koch Industries Website Too Many Times In 1 Minute Just Cost This Truck Driver $183,000”

Gun Banner Dianne FeinsteinAmmoLand – by Dean Weingarten

Arizona – -(Ammoland.com)-  There are many people who advocate for bans on guns, but most of them are smart enough to know that the way to obtain such bans is incrementally, as has been done for the last 75 years.

Why can’t you walk down to the corner hardware store and buy a gun muffler for your pistol or rifle, like they do in Finland? Because a gun ban passed in 1934.   Continue reading “Combating the ‘No One Wants to Ban Guns Lie’”

Breaking the Back of The NJ Gun Control CartelAmmoLand

New Jersey –-(Ammoland.com)- It is no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention that New Jersey is controlled by a powerful Gun Control Cartel.

They are particularly well-funded and have taken control of both houses and the Judicial Branch of our state government.

There may still be some hope of salvaging the Executive branch if we work fast and smart. The key to our success is understanding that they are indeed a Cartel and that they don’t play by the same rules as you and I.   Continue reading “Breaking the Back of The NJ Gun Control Cartel”

Right to Keep and Bear ArmsAmmoLand – by Dean Weingarten

Arizona – -(Ammoland.com)- In Louisiana, a court case is headed to the Supreme Court, based on the right to keep and bear arms amendment that was overwhelmingly approved by voters last year.

The case is one of those that people point at as showing the insanity of the law.  Rico Webb, a 22 year old man with no criminal record, was in his girl friend’s car when it was stopped for a broken taillight.   He had possession of a legal handgun, and he told police that he had a “blunt” (small cigar with marijuana filler) in his backpack.   Continue reading “Louisiana Right to Arms Amendment To Be Tested”

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was in Bermuda on Sunday when a train derailed in the Bronx, the most recent time that the mayor has been out of town when a major incident in New York City occurred, a person familiar with the matter said.

Mr. Bloomberg, who steps down on Dec. 31 after 12 years at City Hall, was playing golf Sunday at Bermuda’s majestic Mid Ocean golf club, a person who spotted the mayor said. The Metro-North Railroad train derailment — killing four people and injuring more than 60 others — occurred at roughly 7:20 a.m.  New York time.   Continue reading “Bloomberg in Bermuda During Derailment”

In the last five years, Houston police officers made the life-and-death decision to use lethal force dozens of times — shooting 121 people, 52 of them fatally.

Many of those wounded or killed by HPD were armed with guns, knives, screwdrivers and in one case a sword. But more than a quarter of the people shot from 2008 to 2012 were unarmed, according to a Houston Chronicle investigation. Some of those unarmed civilians were mentally ill or were killed after routine traffic stops.   Continue reading “HPD officers almost never get punished for shootings”

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A chewable African plant that investigators in Texas believe may be linked to terrorism groups has quietly launched a lengthy investigation in Houston and produced multiple arrests.

The Austin American-Statesman reported Sunday (http://bit.ly/18SfJ9U ) that Muslim civil rights groups are now questioning whether the Texas Department of Public Safety has crossed a line. The agency last year included the olive-shaped leaves known as khat on a statewide threat assessment.   Continue reading “Texas arrests over plant raise terrorism questions”

The numbers are stunning. A recent Houston Chronicle investigation (“Bulletproof,” Nov. 24, A1) reveals that, between 2008 and 2012, Houston police officers shot 121 civilians. In every case, Harris County grand juries cleared the officers of criminal wrongdoing. Not one stood trial.

Is it possible that every one of those shootings was justified? More than a quarter of the people shot were unarmed. One of the men killed was a double amputee in a wheelchair. He threatened an officer with a ballpoint pen.   Continue reading “With Harris County grand juries, it’s ‘pick-a-pal’”

ALBANY — State police are refusing to release statistical information about the number of new pistol permits in New York or how many assault weapons have been registered under a controversial gun-control law enacted in January.

The SAFE Act forbids the disclosure of gun owners’ names who want to keep the information private and also doesn’t allow a new gun database created by the law to be released publicly.   Continue reading “N.Y. won’t release gun law statistics”
