After raising money from Internet donors, a 92-year-old man’s attempts to buy back from his daughter the house that he built have been rejected as he awaits his eviction hearing next week. John Potter of Zaleski, Ohio, received an eviction notice from his daughter, Janice Cotrill, and son-in-law earlier this year, saying that they had terminated his “existing lease.” Potter and his granddaughter, Jaclyn Fraley, raised $139,603 on the website GoFundMe.com in the hope of making an offer on the home that Potter had built about 56 years ago.   Continue reading “92-Year-Old’s Offer to Buy Back Home Denied, Eviction Looms”

Home on the range -- in New York CitySalon – by DANIEL KRIEGER

The only public shooting range in Manhattan is tucked away in the basement of a commercial building at 20 West 20th Street. After passing through the lobby and descending a winding staircase, I came to a long corridor whose green walls are adorned with framed newspaper clippings, photos and painted-on golden bullets pointing the way. The muffled blasts of gunfire grew louder as I got closer.   Continue reading “Home on the range — in New York City”

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish police used water cannon to disperse thousands gathered in Istanbul’s Taksim Square on Saturday to observe a memorial for four people killed during recent anti-government protests. The officers later fired tear gas and rubber bullets, and in some cases beat people with batons, to scatter demonstrators who regrouped in side streets.

The police move came as Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that foreign-led conspirators he alleges are behind the anti-government movement in his country also are fomenting the recent unrest in Brazil.   Continue reading “Turkish police unleash water cannon on protests”

A Texas citizen is asking a state appeals court to decide whether police are justified in launching a no-knock raid on a home they want to search simply because they believe there is a gun inside.

“Whatever the issue might be, whether it’s mass surveillance, no-knock raids, or the right to freely express one’s views about the government, we’ve moved into a new age in which the rights of the citizenry are being treated as a secondary concern by the White House, Congress, the courts and their vast holding of employees, including law enforcement officials,” said John W. Whitehead, president of the Rutherford Institute, which is defending John Gerard Quinn.   Continue reading “Gun Owner Targeted with ‘No-Knock’ Raid”

WHEC News – by Berkeley Brean

There was some drama at the state capital when you were asleep last night. Around 2 o’clock in the morning, State Senators got a surprise. It was a vote to amend the controversial gun law in New York. The amendment exempts retired police officers from the new restrictions on ammunition and assault weapons as long as they are department issued firearms given to the officers for their job, before they retired.

Our question was simple: why do certain people get protection from the state that others — all non-police officers — don’t?   Continue reading “Update: NY gun law exemption for retired police advances”

U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.) on Saturday called on the city to waive water fees for Superstorm Sandy victims on Staten Island who have been billed despite using little or no water.

“All the city needs to do is take all the people who were deferred and check their status,” Grimm told WCBS 880. “If they are not in their homes and they haven’t been able to rebuild yet – for whatever reason – and they can look at the meter, there’s been no water usage whatsoever – then instead of deferring those payments, they should simply waive them.”   Continue reading “Rep.
