It’s appeared on Twitter the Nancy Pelosi letter sending to Ted Wheeler, the Portland Mayor in August 2020. In the letter, House Speaker Pelosi urged Ted Wheeler “to stick to the proven Democratic Play book” to respond to the riots in Portland.

In Fourteenth Colony, Mike Bunn sheds light on the forgotten British colony of West Florida. The book seeks to “put West Florida back on the map of our historical consciousness” (page xi). Comprising parts of present-day Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and the Florida panhandle, West Florida existed as a frontier province along the fringes of the British Empire. During the Revolutionary War, Britain fought Spain in the Gulf South over control of West Florida. As such, West Florida remained in British hands from 1763 to 1781. Organized in chronological order, Bunn provides a narrative of West Florida that is intended to serve as an overview of this “dramatic interlude in Gulf South history . . . [told] from the viewpoint of those who worked so diligently to establish it” (xii). Indeed, Britain’s viewpoint is the main perspective in this book, but Bunn shifts perspectives during the Gulf Coast campaign to offer the Spanish standpoint as they invaded West Florida. As coronavirus cases surge nationwide, the flu has seen a remarkable dip. Reported cases of influenza reached record lows last week, with fewer than 40 diagnoses recorded during Dec. 13-19.

In week 51 of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “FluView” data monitoring system, 36 positive flu tests were documented. This marks a steep decrease from last year’s total of 7,703 cases during the same time frame. The positivity rate has sharply declined this calendar year as only 0.10% of tests taken this year came back positive. The five-year average is 15.80% positive. Bluegrass Today – by John Lawless

Tony Rice, surely the most influential guitarist and vocalist in the history of bluegrass music, died on Christmas morning. He was 69 years of age, and died swiftly without pain.

Tony changed forever the way bluegrass guitar is played, both as a lead and an accompaniment instrument. Audiences saw hints of his genius during his stint with Bluegrass Alliance in the early 1970s, but it appeared fully formed with J.D. Crowe & The New South in 1975 on their classic recording for Rounder Records, known colloquially by its catalog number, 0044. Continue reading “Tony Rice passes”
