Should it be illegal – a crime in and of itself – to dislike cops?

The Fraternal Order of Police – the union for cops – thinks it ought to be. It is officially demanding that cops – already a protected (and entitled) class – be further set apart from ordinary folks by passing legislation that would enable prosecutors to pursue additional “hate crimes” charges against any not-cop who is accused of voicing anti-cop sentiments while, say, “resisting arrest” by attempting to ward off the wood shampoo being administered by a cop. Or in the course of committing any other crime involving one of the state’s enforcers of the laws where the crime-committer can be characterized as having committed the crime with dislike of cops in his heart.   Continue reading ““Hate Crime” Protection For Heroes?”

HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — The Department of Motor Vehicles is so overwhelmed with requests for new driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations that it can take up to three months to get an appointment or a half-day wait in the lobby.

A DMV spokesman told KCAL9 Political Reporter Dave Bryan there has been a crush of applications for new licenses for undocumented immigrants, a program that began earlier this month. The spokesman said the DMV is working to address the problems, but some people are having to take a day off of work to handle a 15-minute transaction.   Continue reading “Some Motorists Wait Months For DMV Appointments After Immigrants Law Goes Into Effect”

A San Francisco deputy public defender was handcuffed and arrested at the Hall of Justice after she objected to city police officers questioning her client outside a courtroom, an incident that her office called outrageous and police officials defended as appropriate.

The Tuesday afternoon arrest of attorney Jami Tillotson as she denied police officers’ attempts to take photos of her client without explanation raised questions about police intimidation and harassment, Public Defender Jeff Adachi said at a Wednesday news conference.   Continue reading “S.F. public defender detained outside court; office outraged”

In 2011, 1 in 25 Americans was arrested. In a few years, if the FBI has its way, the federal government will possess the DNA of all of those people and more. Under the radar of most lawmakers and journalists, the Bureau—with private industry and congress’ help—is pushing the most massive expansion of biometric state surveillance since the invention of the fingerprint.

Late last year, the FBI cut the ribbon on its one billion dollar biometrics database, called Next Generation Identification. Since NGI’s official launch, state and local law enforcement officials have been encouraged to submit face prints, fingerprints, retina scans, photos of tattoos and scars, and DNA collected from people nationwide to the FBI’s central database. Those state and local officials can also search against the FBI’s biometrics store, if they want to identify someone. With NGI in full operation, the scary future of Minority Report infamy takes a giant leap forward into the world of non-fiction.    Continue reading “The FBI’s plan to collect everyone’s DNA just got a huge boost from congress”

Rialto, CA– Rialto, California, has become the poster child for those who believe body cameras will make a difference after a CNN report in 2013 raved about how the department had seen a 60% reduction in use of force instances and an 88% reduction in officer complaints since implementing the devices.

It seems to be impossible to even have a conversation about the police accountability without “Rialto” being mentioned at least once.   Continue reading “Man Honks Horn at Cops Because they’re Blocking a Driveway, So they Brutally Beat Him”

The NYPD is investigating the alleged beating and illegal stop-and-search of a decorated Marine veteran in Queens by a pair of undercover cops, the Daily News has learned.

The disturbing incident occurred Jan. 15 as NYPD commanders were putting heat on cops to boost arrest activity in the wake of a massive work slowdown, just a stone’s throw from the new Police Academy where Commissioner Bill Bratton delivered a tough-sounding speech last year vowing to kick bad apples off the force.   Continue reading “NYPD probes two undercover officer for allegedly assaulting former Marine sergeant”

Forget sitting in the corner or getting sent to the principal’s office. Not in Virginia, at least, where a four-year-old preschooler at an elementary school was handcuffed, shackled, and taken by a sheriff in a squad car to the police station. There he was forced to talk to jail inmates to “scare” him straight. And just for safe measure, the school threw in a suspension.

The crime? The preschooler defiantly tossed a few items on the floor in class.   Continue reading “Cops used ‘extreme forms of restraint’ on 4-year-old”

Some Supreme Court justices question whether Fourth Amendment intrusions during traffic stops have gone too far.

Should police have the power to order a driver out of his car while a search is conducted with a drug dog — even when there is no reason to believe the motorist has done anything wrong? That was the question posed to the US Supreme Court during oral arguments on Wednesday in the case of Dennys Rodriguez.   Continue reading “US Supreme Court Considers Random Use Of Drug Dogs During Traffic Stops”

Radar devices that allow police officers to effectively see into suspects’ homes raise “privacy concerns of the highest order,” top lawmakers on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee said Thursday.

At least 50 U.S. law enforcement agencies have secretly equipped their officers with that technology, with little notice to the public or the courts. The devices work like very fine motion detectors, capable of determining whether someone is inside a building by detecting movement as slight as human breathing.   Continue reading “Senators question Holder on police use of motion detectors”
