For some time, food chain Whole Foods Market and organic farmers have had a cooperative, mutual relationship. The retail grocer has enabled organic farmers to gain a sizable foothold in the food market at a time when Americans’ passion for healthier alternatives to the GMO-laden, processed foods market is rising.
As The New York Times reported, Whole Foods’ stores were more like “showcases” for organic products – fruits, vegetables and flowers that are labeled with the names of the farmers who grow them. (Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz) Crate and Barrel plans to close its Manhattan flagship this summer in the face of rising Madison Avenue rents, the company confirmed Monday.
The Northbrook-based furniture and home accessories retailer on Aug. 2 plans to close the 62,000-square-foot store at 650 Madison Ave., where it has operated for more than 20 years. An interdisciplinary team of Anglo-Saxon experts and microbiologists have discovered a treatment against modern antibiotic-resistant superbugs in an unlikely place: a 1,000-year-old leatherbound volume called Bald’s Leechbook. This Old English manuscript, currently residing at the British Library, is one of the earliest known medical textbooks.
The centuries-old recipe for treating eye infections calls for two types of Allium (garlic and onion or leek), wine, and oxgall (that’s bile from a cow’s stomach). The instructions, translated by University of Nottingham’s Christina Lee, are incredibly specific: It requires the use of a brass vessel for brewing, a particular straining technique to purify it, and the mixture must be left for nine days before use. Asymmetric tactics rely on the idea of fighting smarter, rather than fighting directly, against a larger or more technologically advanced aggressor. It means turning your opponent’s strengths into weaknesses.
For instance, if your opponent relies on the superiority of his tanks and armor, make him fight in the mountains where his armor is useless. If he relies on air superiority, make him sift through a thick canopy where his eye in the sky sees nothing, or make it dangerous for him to land and refuel such vehicles at all. If he relies on body armor for safety, make him fight uphill so that the extra weight wears him down. If his surveillance and security techniques are a little too sensitive and effective, create constant false positives, until he can no longer trust his own alert systems. And, if most of his weaponry and soldiers are heavily reliant on a particular piece of technology, make that technology useless in the field. Force your opponent to fight on fairer ground, where the man with the most skill and intelligence prevails rather than the man with the most million dollar toys. Much of the mainstream American food supply is laden with unhealthy additives, artificial flavorings, coloring, dyes, preservatives, hormones, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and toxins. Not everyone agrees that GMOs have been proven harmful to humans, which is why the food chains listed here were selected specifically because they are responsible for a wide variety of health violations—the GMOs and their concealment from public knowledge are included for informational purposes. Garden City, KS — Last month, Kansas mother Shona Banda made headlines when her son was removed from her custody after he defended her use of medical marijuana to treat Crohn’s Disease. He had spoken up about her use at an anti-drug presentation at his school. This prompted the school to call to Child Protective Services and authorities, which led to a raid on her home on March 24.
The raid found what local Garden City authorities described as “‘1.25 pounds of marijuana in plant, oil, joint, gel and capsule form and drug paraphernalia’ along with what was characterized as a ‘lab used for manufacturing cannabis oil’” (it should be noted that at the time, the Washington Post reported police found just 2 ounces of cannabis oil). Banda has seen her eleven-year-old son only once since he was taken from her. Continue reading “Mother Faces 30 Years in Prison for Using Cannabis to Treat Crohn’s Disease”
Refugee Resettlement Watch – by Ann Cocoran
Update June 9th: Part III is here. It is for everyone, not just Texans.
As I said yesterday in Part I of the (hopefully) Texas trilogy, in 2011 Texas moved into the number one spot in the nation for refugee resettlement. Yesterday someone commented to me that that is the year the push was on to begin turning Texas BLUE. The refugee numbers themselves are not great enough yet, but combined with all of the other immigration to Texas, both legal and illegal, the idea is not so far-fetched.
