KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Hundreds of Afghans protested Saturday against alleged fraud in last week’s presidential runoff, part of escalating tensions over what Western officials had hoped would be a smooth transfer of power as violence across the country killed at least 13 people.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Thousands of heavily-armed Shiite militiamen paraded through several Iraqi cities Saturday as Sunni militants seized two strategically located towns in what appeared to be a new offensive in western Anbar province.

The capture of the two towns — Qaim on the Syrian border Friday and Rawah along the Euphrates River on Saturday— dealt another blow to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s government, which has struggled to push back against Islamic extremists and allied militants who have seized large swaths of the country’s north, including the second-largest city of Mosul.   Continue reading “Iraq militia parades as insurgents seize crossing”

    I’d guess it was about ten minutes after a rumor emerged of the militia going to protect the southern border that the spooks provided a “leader” for them, just to make sure they’re as ineffective at closing the border as the federal government’s been for the last thirty years.

    I’m sure they wasted no time pulling a shill out of a hat calling for all militia to stand down, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he were waiting in the wings just for this day.

Just when it appeared that the United Nations could not be more ineffective in protecting Palestinian rights and holding Israel accountable for violating them, here comes the news that Israel has been elected as vice-chair of the UN Special Commitee on Decolonization – which deals among other things with matters related to Palestinian refugees.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Hundreds of immigrant families caught crossing the border may be coming to New Mexico.

Deacon Thomas Baca is the executive director of Catholic Charities and told KFOX14 that nearly 300 immigrant families are in need of housing.

A Texas man is standing defiant after he claims he was told by his apartment complex that  he had to remove an American flag from his balcony because it was a “threat towards the Muslim community.”

Duy Tran told KHOU that he has friends who died for the country, so he decided to hang one from his balcony after moving into a new apartment in Webster, Texas. In his latest column, former U.S. Treasury official Paul Craig Roberts says that George W. Bush and Barack Obama have established the precedent that impeachment is a “dead letter law,” with both Congress and the Judiciary accepting their impotence in the face of a tyrannical executive. As an illustration of how this state of affairs came about, Roberts cites a communication he received from Professor Francis A. Boyle of the University of Illinois Law School.

Boyle relates how, on the eve of the Iraq War in March 2003, Rep. John Conyers, the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, convened an emergency meeting of 40 or more of his top advisors, mostly lawyers. Boyle continues:
