WEB Notes: Remember Obama was caught on a hot mic stating to then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, “After my election I have more flexibility.”

Flashback: (VideoHuffington Post) – The deal looked sketchy from the start. To outfit Afghanistan’s security forces with new helicopters, the Pentagon bypassed U.S. companies and turned instead to Moscow for dozens of Russian Mi-17 rotorcraft at a cost of more than $1 billion.   Continue reading “Why is US Buying $1 Billion Worth of Russian Helicopters for Afghan Military?”

Lawyers will ask the U.S. Supreme Court today to absolve a former Roanoke policeman of a federal firearms conviction and hope to highlight what they see as a problem with gun store paperwork requirements.

In 2009, Bruce Abramski Jr. used his law enforcement discount to buy a pistol at a Collinsville gun store and resold the weapon four days later to his uncle, who wanted a gun for protection, had a clean background and was legally entitled to have one.   Continue reading “High court to hear gun purchase case”

LOS ANGELES –  Minutes before a gunman opened fire in a Los Angeles International Airport terminal last fall, killing a security screener and wounding three other people, the two armed officers assigned to the area left for breaks without informing a dispatcher as required.

The Los Angeles Airport Police Department officers were outside Terminal 3 when authorities say Paul Ciancia opened fire with an assault rifle in an attack targeting Transportation Security Administration officers, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press. The officials requested anonymity, saying they were briefed on the shooting but were not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.   Continue reading “LAX officers reportedly went on breaks minutes before airport shooting”

Wall Street’s fat cats will be just fine with Americans rolling fat joints en masse once the other 48 states go the way of Colorado and Washington on the marijuana legalization issue. Sure enough, as Capital New York’s Joanna Molloy put it, “Marijuana is going corporate.”

Investors are becoming emboldened and putting their money into an expected $3 billion cannabis market this year—double that of 2013—from sales in medical dispensaries in 20 states and D.C., and in retail boutiques in Colorado and Washington, where recreational use is now legal.   Continue reading “Where ‘Canabusiness’ Goes, Wall Street’s Sure to Follow”

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid…” — Barack Obama

“You smoke that shit, everything kind of gets weird, you know what I mean?” — Bunny in Platoon

Despite having spent a good many years in the Sixties (ten, to be exact, although I only remember about half of ‘em), I was never much of a pot head.  Any substance which led me to believe that Gilligan’s Island was a masterpiece of the performing arts was not to be trusted.  Grass gave most people the giggles; for a tiny minority of us, it provided the certainty we were on the verge of a massive heart attack.  Body paranoia was the doper’s term for such unease. It was an affliction which led chronic sufferers back to the conviviality of the closest taproom where they could inebriate themselves legally until they keeled over into a puddle of their own effluvia and were dragged home by their designated drivers.   Continue reading “Don’t Bogart That Joint, Barack …”

An Indiana police chief’s day ended with a bang when he accidentally shot himself in the leg on Saturday – the second time in his career that he’s turned his own gun on his body.

David Councellor is running to become Fayette County’s new sheriff, but he chose the wrong way to make headlines when he unintentionally discharged his 40-caliber Glock handgun while perusing other firearms at a local gun shop.   Continue reading “Indiana police chief accidentally shoots himself for the second time”

The Azle, TX area north of Fort Worth has experienced no fewer than 30 earthquakes since November, and residents say it’s a result of increased fracking activity.   Continue reading “Texans angrily protest fracking after 30 earthquakes hit town”

A new report states that pollution from China is causing smog on the West Coast of the USA.

Now you’ll have to forgive my confusion here but if we take Beijing as the starting point, the distance to The West Coast is 6,266 miles. That’s a long way for pollution to travel on the wind.

It’s farther, for example, than the 5,363 miles the wind has to travel from Fukushima.   Continue reading “If Pollution From China Affects The West Coast How Come Pollution From Fukushima Doesn’t?”
