Hundreds of truck drivers – many from the logging industry – reportedly descended on the Oregon Capitol on Thursday to protest emissions control legislation in the state’s Senate.
The truckers were protesting a cap-and-trade bill, House Bill 2020, that would place a cap on greenhouse gas emissions, and businesses that produce more pollution would be required to purchase tradable “credits” or “allowances” for every ton of greenhouse gas they emit. Since President Trump escalated the trade war last month by slapping a 25% tariff on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, and is on the verge of taxing the remainder, Beijing has spawned nationalist sentiment across the country that has left many Chinese consumers shunning American products, reported Reuters.
According to a new poll conducted by London-based advisory firm Brunswick, which surveyed 1,000 Chinese consumers, 56% of respondents said they had avoided American products, while 68% said their impression of American firms has become increasingly negative. Mexico is deploying its new militarized National Guard police force within Mexico City in an effort to quell a recent surge in violent criminal activity, according to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
“We need a stronger presence of security forces and more protection for residents of the capital,” Lopez Obrador said during his daily news conference on Thursday, pointing to increases in homicides, kidnappings and extortion amid intense cartel turf wars, according to Reuters. California gun owners have been rushing to buy bullets before a new background check law goes into effect statewide on Monday, the first of its kind in the nation.

RCMP in Saskatchewan have launched an investigation into an online video featuring the head of an extremist group that’s poised to become Canada’s next official political party.
The video was posted on the website of the Canadian Nationalist Party and on its Facebook and YouTube pages. It shows the leader of the group, Travis Patron, denouncing what he describes as “the parasitic tribe” or “black sheep” who he claims control the media and the central bank in Canada. Since 2015, Yemen’s Customs and Consumer Protection has had to either send back or seize over 24,000 tons of aid determined unfit for consumption sent from the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). Among the “aid” included 15,000 tons of supplementary food for pregnant women and medicine.
On November 6, Yemen’s Port Authority rejected and sent back a vessel from the World Food Program containing 10,000 tons of white wheat. After inspection, authorities noticed the wheat was infested with live insects. A similar incident occurred in February when authorities inspected a WFP shipment containing 96,000 bags wheat was not stamped with an expiration or production date. Penguin Random House has stopped short of demands to withdraw Pedro Baños’s How They Rule the World from sale, but will print no further copies of the book after an external review found the Spanish-language edition contains “echoes of Jewish conspiracy theories”.
The publisher initially rejected allegations of antisemitism in the book, which claims to reveal “the 22 secret strategies of global power”. But after continued pressure from organisations including the Campaign Against Antisemitism, which called for the book’s withdrawal, Penguin commissioned an external review, led by Julia Neuberger, which yesterday announced its results. As summer hits its peak and the July Fourth holiday nears, an outbreak of blue-green algae on New Jersey’s largest lake has prompted the state’s environmental department to warn people to stay away from the water.
The agency also advised local authorities to close all public beaches.

The wreck of what appears to be a British ship destroyed during the siege of Yorktown in 1781 has been discovered in Virginia.
