Last week, the National Rifle Association publicly celebrated its success in striking down an assault weapons ban in Boulder, Colo. Five days later, Boulder was the scene of a mass shooting, reportedly with the same kind of weapon that the city tried to ban.

On Monday, the nation’s attention was focused on the Rocky Mountain college town after a gunman reportedly killed at least ten people, including a police officer, at a local supermarket. The Young Conservatives of Texas at Sam Houston State University set up a memorial on the evening of Feb. 23 to honor victims of socialism only to find it gone the next morning.

The City Council in Evanston, Ill., voted 8-1 late Monday to approve a plan to make reparations available to Black residents over past discrimination and the lingering effects of slavery.

The plan, which could be the first of its kind in the U.S., is to distribute $400,000 to eligible Black households. The Associated Press reported that qualifying households in the city of 73,000 would be eligible to receive $25,000 for home repairs or down payments on property.
