SPRAGUE RIVER, Ore. (KTVZ) — The Bootleg Fire that broke out earlier this week on the Fremont-Winema National Forest nearly doubled in size yet again on Friday, to nearly 77,000 acres, and Klamath County officials expanded the evacuation zones as a result.

The Bootleg Fire continues to burn on the Fremont-Winema National Forest and on private lands. Hot and dry weather conditions have continued overnight and are forecast through today. KLAMATH COUNTY, Ore. — The Bootleg Fire, a wildfire that broke out in southern Oregon’s mountains is spreading in windy, hot and dry conditions. As of Friday morning, the fire had grown to 38,892 acres, more than doubling in size during the past 24 hours. Fire officials have reported between 0% to 1% containment.

The fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain in mixed conifer and lodgepole pine in the Fremont-Winema National Forest, about 10 miles northeast of the unincorporated community of Sprague River.

President Joe Biden signed a wide-ranging executive order Friday afternoon aimed at minimizing the stranglehold of monopolies on certain industries and increasing competition among companies, which the White House believes will benefit consumers by driving down prices.

“For decades, corporate consolidation has been accelerating. In over 75% of U.S. industries, a smaller number of large companies now control more of the business than they did 20 years ago. A magnitude 5.9 earthquake shook the California-Nevada border Thursday afternoon, with people reporting feeling a jolt hundreds of miles away, as far as the Bay Area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The man arrested and charged in the killing of an Indiana police officer at an FBI office had been a mayoral candidate and federal prisons employee, media outlets reported.

A suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of a golf pro at a Georgia country club, media outlets report.

A Cobb County sheriff spokesperson said Bryan Rhoden was arrested Thursday by deputies and U.S. marshals in the shooting death of Gene Siller, a golf pro at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A western Indiana police officer was fatally shot Wednesday when he was ambushed near FBI offices in Terre Haute, according to federal officials.

Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated on Wednesday at his home by a group of unidentified gunmen, interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph announced. Joseph said the security situation in the country was “under the control” of Haiti’s police and military.

Ten of the 11 militiamen arrested by Massachusetts State Police following a nine-hour-long armed standoff that shut down a portion of Interstate 95 over the holiday weekend will be arraigned Tuesday.

KENNESAW, Ga. (AP) — A professional golfer and two other men were killed in a shooting at an Atlanta-area country club and the suspect is still at large, authorities said.

Officers found an unresponsive man with an apparent gunshot wound to the head Saturday afternoon near the 10th hole of the golf course at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Cobb County Police Officer Shenise Barner told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced Friday to 22 and a half years in prison for the murder of George Floyd, more than one year after Floyd’s death sparked an international movement against police brutality.

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill, who presided over Chauvin’s murder trial, handed down a sentence of 270 months for charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s May 25, 2020, death.
