The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) said Monday it’s concerned that intellectual property pirates are being exposed to malware and other dangers.

“It is important to note that websites that traffic in infringing movies, television shows, and other copyrighted content do not harm only the rights holder. Malicious software or malware, which puts Internet users at risk of identity theft, fraud, and other ills, is increasingly becoming a source of revenue for pirate sites,” the lobbying group told (PDF) US trade officials on Monday in its latest report about global “notorious markets” for illegal content.   Continue reading “Who knew? ARNOLDS PARK, Iowa — For almost 40 years, Carole Hinders has dished out Mexican specialties at her modest cash-only restaurant. For just as long, she deposited the earnings at a small bank branch a block away — until last year, when two tax agents knocked on her door and informed her that they had seized her checking account, almost $33,000.

The Internal Revenue Service agents did not accuse Ms. Hinders of money laundering or cheating on her taxes — in fact, she has not been charged with any crime. CHARLESTOWN, IN — A town is working to “demolish a working-class neighborhood” by seizing 354 homes and passing the land off to a private commercial developer. Using federal dollars and the highly-abused power of eminent domain, the city intends to evict multitudes of families to make way for economic progress.

The community under fire is called “Pleasant Ridge.” It contains hundreds of small homes that were built during World War II as military housing. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A man suspected of killing two deputies during a shooting rampage in Northern California was deported twice to Mexico and had a drug conviction, federal authorities said Saturday.

The suspected shooter told Sacramento County Sheriff’s investigators that he was 34-year-old Marcelo Marquez of Salt Lake City. I want to give a hat tip to a recent Wall Street Journal article that brought to my attention two damning admissions by JPMorgan’s (JPM) CEO and Chairman of the Board, Jamie Dimon.  The irony is that Dimon was lulled into making these admissions because he was basking in the perfect calm created by the confluence of Sorkin’s and CNBC’s storied sycophancy at the one place on earth where elite bankers feel most loved, honored, and protected – the annual meeting of the ultra-wealthy in Davos, Switzerland.  Sorkin was the only interviewer, so Dimon faced no risk of tough questions.  It may well have been this perfect setting that caused Dimon to let slip the mask and reveal two illustrative sins of elite bankers reported in the WSJ article.   Continue reading “Jamie Dimon: U.S. Must Create a “Safe Harbor” Where JPM’s Corruption Is Not “Punished””

WASHINGTON — A shooting at a suburban Washington state high school on Friday is likely to intensify an already heated debate over two competing state ballot measures related to gun background checks, both of which will go before voters on Nov. 4.

Information on the shooting was still emerging Friday afternoon, but multiple reports describe a lone gunman opening fire on the school cafeteria at Marysville Pilchuck High School, in Marysville, Washington. At least four students were injured and one was killed, not including the shooter. Several media outlets have reported that the gunman, who has not yet been publicly identified by authorities, was dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. The voter rolls kept by the State Board of Elections contain 145 names that belong to a certain category of ineligible voter – immigrants in the U.S. under a federal program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, according to elections officials.
