Just in time for the 2016 campaign season, cybersecurity experts have sent out this dire warning, based on analysis of Virginia polls: Watch out for hackers – voting machines are easy to compromise.
The Virginia Information Technologies Agency’s Commonwealth Security and Risk Management agency issued a new report finding the machines that have been in use by the state since 2002 have weak security – so weak, in fact, that even the most amateur of hackers could break into the system, Fox News reported. The report came after one precinct in the state reported “unusual activity with some of the devices used to capture votes” in last November’s elections. Hackers linked to China appear to have gained access to the sensitive background information submitted by intelligence and military personnel for security clearances, several U.S. officials said Friday, describing a second cyberbreach of federal records that could dramatically compound the potential damage.
The forms authorities believed to have been accessed, known as Standard Form 86, require applicants to fill out deeply personal information about mental illnesses, drug and alcohol use, past arrests and bankruptcies. They also require the listing of contacts and relatives, potentially exposing any foreign relatives of U.S. intelligence employees to coercion. Both the applicant’s Social Security number and that of his or her cohabitant is required. Continue reading “Officials: Second hack exposed military and intel data”
Hackers stole personnel data and Social Security numbers for every federal employee, a government worker union said Thursday, saying that the cyber theft of U.S. employee information was more damaging than the Obama administration has acknowledged.
Sen. Harry Reid, the Democratic leader, said on the Senate floor that the December hack into Office of Personnel Management data was carried out by “the Chinese” without specifying whether he meant the Chinese government or individuals. Reid is one of eight lawmakers briefed on the most secret intelligence information. U.S. officials have declined to publicly blame China, which has denied involvement. As the number of cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in South Korea approaches 100 (with 7 deaths), the virus has begun to receive serious attention. The World Health Organization has begun a joint mission with the Korean government to analyze the virus and formulate an organized and effective response to it.
First identified three years ago, MERS is caused by a coronavirus called MERS-CoV. This virus comes from the same family that caused the SARS(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) epidemic in Asia some years back. MERS originated in the Middle East and has been linked to respiratory disease in camels: A recent study reports that 75% of camels in the area have evidence of past exposure to the virus. Little, however, is known about methods of transmission. To date, there have been about 1200 cases of MERS in 25 countries, almost all in the Middle East or in travelers from that area.
