NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Library supporters dressed in cardboard costumes of their favorite books Monday to protest plans to renovate the New York Public Library’s main branch and sell the popular Mid-Manhattan branch.
As WCBS 880′s Monica Miller reported, members of the Library Lovers League, who demonstrated on the steps of the main branch, wanted to remind Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio about his campaign promise to scrap the projects. The hospital trips can leave parents with costly medical bills, and parents often have to leave work early to pick up their children. Researchers say they have found a way to get trucks off clogged New York City streets during the busiest parts of the day, and they are hoping to use the same approach soon in other U.S. cities.
A two-year experiment that paid customers, such as shops and restaurants, to receive their supplies at night worked better at changing truck delivery times than previous attempts to discourage daytime deliveries by raising tolls during peak hours, said lead researcher, Jose Holguin-Veras, a professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The number of children taking powerful antipsychotic drugs has nearly tripled over the last 10 to 15 years, according to recent research. The increase comes not because of an epidemic of schizophrenia or other forms of serious mental illness in children, but because doctors are increasingly prescribing the drugs to treat behavior problems, a use not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A federal judge ruled Monday that the National Security Agency program which collects information on nearly all telephone calls made to, from or within the United States is likely to be unconstitutional.
U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon found that the program appears to run afoul of the Fourth Amendment prohibition on unreasonable searches and seizures. He also said the Justice Department had failed to demonstrate that collecting the so-called metadata had helped to head off terrorist attacks. A school in Minnesota prohibited the display of a Christmas poster designed by a student for fear that it could be interpreted as in some way religious, despite the fact that it features modern day a cartoon character.
Rights Group The Rutherford Institute have taken up the case, noting that the depiction of Jack Skellington from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas can in no way be defined as anything but a secular image, and that PACT Charter School officials have violated First Amendment rights by banning it. Filmmaker Tom Laughlin, who shot to fame as the rugged half-breed action hero “Billy Jack,” died Thursday in Thousand Oaks, California surrounded by his family. He was 82 years old.
While involved at one point with just about every facet of the film business, Laughlin may be best known for his series of “Billy Jack” films. The following sheriffs, state sheriff’s associations, and police chiefs have vowed to uphold and defend the Constitution against Obama’s unconstitutional gun control measures. We applaud these public servants for their courage and conviction.
The remarkable thing about what these brave men and women are doing is that nobody told them to do it. Neither the CSPOA nor any other organization that we are aware of contacted sheriffs across the nation and asked them to make statements; this is something sheriffs did on their own, or because their constituents requested it of them. Soon, people started submitting letters and links to us, and it was such a remarkable thing that we started to collect all the names and list them together. Then the miracle happened: Other sheriffs across the nation have been inspired by the courage of those who stood first. Now we see the power of standing, even if you fear you may stand alone. Days after terrorists attacked the U.S. mission in Benghazi, a State Department official ordered an executive at the security company charged with protecting the special compound not to respond to media inquiries, according to documents obtained by Judicial Watch.
The order was delivered via electronic mail and it’s part of a new batch of State Department documents obtained by JW in an ongoing investigation of the September 11, 2012 Benghazi attack and subsequent cover-up by the Obama administration. The nation’s largest frozen pizza company says it will no longer accept milk from a Wisconsin dairy farm after NBC News showed the company undercover video shot by an animal rights group of workers on the farm kicking, beating and stabbing cows and dragging the animals with ropes.
“Nestlé is outraged and deeply saddened by the mistreatment of animals shown in this video,” said Deborah Cross, a spokesperson for Nestlé’s pizza division, which manufactures DiGiorno pizza.
