ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A remote Alaska Native village where only half the homes have indoor plumbing is among rural communities nationwide that will receive upgrades to water and wastewater systems with $352 million in grants and loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is scheduled to announce the funding Thursday at a convention of Alaska Natives in Anchorage. WASHINGTON (AP) — Voters may not know it, but the millions of dollars paying for ads on ballot measures they will consider next month come from large companies and national advocacy groups.

Many of the messages are tailored to defend or expand the business interests of companies such as Coca-Cola, Monsanto and ExxonMobil, yet few have their names in the ads. For example, $6.4 million in ads funded by Coloradans for Better Schools is backed by the Rhode Island-based Twin Rivers Casino in favor of a ballot initiative that would expand gambling to horse tracks. DENVER (AP) — The case of three teenage girls who possibly tried to join Islamic State militants poses vexing questions for U.S. officials about terror groups’ use of social media to recruit people inside the United States.

The man who jumped the White House fence on Wednesday has been charged with assault, according to Secret Service Spokesman Ed Donovan.

Dominic Adesanya, 23, climbed the north Fence of the White House at 7:16 pm on Wednesday evening. He was immediately taken into custody by Secret Service K-9 teams and uniformed division officers, Donovan said.

Adesanya was charged with two counts of felony assault on a police officer for attacking the Secret Service dogs that helped take him down. SPRINGFIELD — The Clark County OVI Task Force will operate a No Refusal OVI checkpoint Friday, Oct. 24, in Clark County.

According to the task force, a “No Refusal Checkpoint” means that every car will be checked to ensure that drivers are not impaired. Some of President Obama’s most ardent supporters have accused Republicans of “politicizing” the Ebola crisis. It’s not a terribly serious accusation; a public health emergency requires the response of many government agencies, so how could politics not be involved? There’s nothing wrong with that.

Earlier this week, the federal government’s National Science Foundation, an entity created to encourage the study of science — encouragement that it achieves by awarding grants to scholars and universities — announced that it had awarded a grant to study what people say about themselves and others in social media. The NSF dubbed the project Truthy, a reference to comedian Stephen Colbert’s invention and hilarious use of the word “truthiness.”

The reference to Colbert is cute, and he is a very funny guy, but when the feds get into the business of monitoring speech, it is surely no joke; it is a nightmare. Southern Oregon University administrators told students that they couldn’t freely distribute copies of the Constitution out in the open, on public university property. Officials tried to usher the students indoors, to the preposterously unconstitutional “free speech zone” where political activity is deemed permissible.

The students, who wish to start a Students for Concealed Carry chapter at the university, recorded their interactions with various officials. The footage was published by Campus Reform.
