The U.S. Supreme Court late Thursday blocked Wisconsin from enforcing its strict voter identification law in November’s election.

By a 6-3 vote, the justices granted an emergency appeal from civil rights lawyers, who argued it was too late to put the rule into effect this year.

A Terrace RCMP officer is under investigation after a violent arrest was caught on tape and given to a local newspaper.

The video — captured last May — shows an unnamed officer punching a young man in the head as he lies on the ground and is handcuffed.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber’s fiancée admitted Thursday that she violated the law when she married an immigrant seeking to retain residency in the United States.

Cylvia Hayes said in a tearful news conference that she believes she was paid around $5,000 US for the 1997 marriage. A mixed-martial artist nicknamed “Mayhem” was arrested at his home  Thursday after apparently live-tweeted an hourslong standoff with the Sheriff’s Department that ended after a SWAT team, a bomb squad and crisis negotiators came to his Mission Viejo home on Thursday.

Deputies were serving an arrest warrant for alleged stalking and domestic violence in the 26000 block of Avenida Calidad (map) about 10 a.m. when a man barricaded himself inside the home, Lt. President Barack Obama will declare a swath of the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles as a national monument on Friday, the White House said, following an 11-year effort that got caught up in partisan politics.

The “Massachusetts Task Force on School Safety and Security” released a report. As you’d expect from a report written with plenty of police input and none from the civil liberties community, it recommends changes that are highly intrusive, probably ineffective, definitely expensive, and likely to benefit police more than they benefit students.
