American savers have had it hard enough, earning next to nothing on bank deposits and money market funds. But could it get worse, with banks here charging depositors interest to hold their money and high-quality bonds yielding nothing at all?

It might seem a curious question, given broad expectations for higher U.S. interest rates, as job growth gathers momentum and the Federal Reserve has openly hinted it is eager to end its seven-year policy of near-zero short-term interest rates.

In a move that could have ramifications for domestic anti-terrorism efforts, US House Speaker John Boehner said he would let funding for the Department of Homeland Security lapse on Feb. 27 in order to reverse Obama’s immigration reform actions.

House Republicans have passed a Homeland Security appropriations bill, but it is contingent upon defunding Obama’s 2012 and 2014 executive orders that negated the threat of deportation for an estimated five million undocumented immigrants seeking refuge in the United States.   Continue reading “Dept. of Homeland Security shutdown looms, would idle 15% of workforce”

The ’60s pop star made a hit career out of musical moping

Lesley Gore was an icon to young women in the 1960s with feisty hits that expressed the frustrations of being a teenager. It’s a theme that could easily feel stale in 2015, but “It’s My Party” remains popular on oldies stations and “You Don’t Own Me” still holds lessons for girls in the 21st century.

The singer-songwriter died of cancer Monday at age 68, her longtime partner Lois Sasson confirmed. In honor of her life and influence, here are five of the New Jersey-raised singer’s best hits.   Continue reading “‘It’s My Party’ Singer Lesley Gore Dies at 68: Listen to 5 of Her Best Songs”

David Codrea:

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives posted a proposed rule changeFriday removing a previous exemption and banning the manufacture, import and sale of “5.56 mm (.223) SS109 and M855 ‘green tip’ ammunition containing a steel core,” saying it now considers it to be “non-sporting” handgun ammunition capable of penetrating protective vests worn by law enforcement officers. This latest development, ceding to law enforcement lobby interests, is prompted by the development of handguns capable of firing the cited ammunition. The alarmists keep telling us their concern about global warming is all about man’s stewardship of the environment. But we know that’s not true. A United Nations official has now confirmed this.

At a news conference last week in Brussels, Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, admitted that the goal of environmental activists is not to save the world from ecological calamity but to destroy capitalism.   Continue reading “U.N. MOUNT CARBON, W.Va. — Multiple tanker rail cars carrying crude oil derailed Monday afternoon in Fayette County, triggering explosions and a huge fire as several cars rolled through a residential subdivision and into the Kanawha River.

At least one house was destroyed, but police have found no evidence of fatalities.

The CSX train jumped the tracks at about 1:20 p.m. Eyewitness Randy Fitzwater of Boomer said he thought a plane had crashed.

“I heard this loud noise. It sounded like a jet airplane flew over my house and then I heard an explosion,” Fitzwater told Metronews.  “I looked across the river and I could see this big ball of flame.”   Continue reading “Evacuations Ordered – Train derailment sends oil cars into Kanawha River; explosions erupt”

You know things are bad in the ship-building business when… amid considerably larger than expected losses, China’s COSCO announced that it has dis-assembled 8 vessels in January alone (including 3 bulk carriers) and will be decommissioning and disposing of them as it awaits a “more conducive” environment. It appears that is not coming anytime soon, as The Baltic Dry Index just hit 522 – a new all-time low (down a stunning 53 of the last 55 days).   Continue reading “China’s COSCO Dis-Assembles 8 Ships Amid Glut As Baltic Dry Hits Another Record Low”

I have been writing about the growing threat I see coming from Washington, D.C.  I see this nation traveling down the same road Germany traveled in the 1930’s, and for many of the same reasons.  But there are people – ignorant people – who tell me this could never happen here.

Well, if you are among those who think this sort of thing could never happen here, I say learn your history – because it already has:   Continue reading “So You Say It Can’t Happen Here? WRONG! It Already Has”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Government surveyors have determined a new height for the Washington Monument that’s nearly 10 inches shorter than what has been thought for more than 130 years, officials will announce Monday.

The new measurement puts the monument at 554 feet, 7 and eleven-thirty-seconds of an inch, as measured from the floor of the main entrance to the top. Ever since the stone obelisk was completed in 1884, however, the historic height has been recorded at 555 feet, 5 and 1/8 inches. It’s a number circulated for decades on tours of the capital and in civics classes about the monument honoring the nation’s first president.   Continue reading “Surveyors determine new height for Washington Monument in DC”
