Former Soviet leader and Nobel prize winner Mikhail Gorbachev warned today that the battle in Ukraine could result in a nuclear war:

J.C. Penney said Thursday it will close about 40 stores over the next year.
The closures, which represent nearly 4 percent of the 1,060 Penney U.S. stores, will affect about 2,250 employees, according to spokesman Joey Thomas.

GALESBURG, Mich. — A three-mile radius has been evacuated around a massive deadly pileup on I-94 as four semis burn, including one with hazardous material and another hauling fireworks.
Both directions of I-94 are closed in eastern Kalamazoo County due to the wreck involving more than 100 vehicles.

Four people and one hostage-taker have been killed at a supermarket in Paris as security forces undertook a rescue operation, according to reports. A worker in Dammartin-en-Goele has been freed, and the two suspects in the Charlie Hebdo massacre killed.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A 17-year-old girl being forced by state officials to undergo chemotherapy for her cancer said Thursday she understands she’ll die if she stops treatment but it should be her decision.
The state Supreme Court ruled earlier in the day state officials aren’t violating the rights of the girl, Cassandra C., who has Hodgkin lymphoma. Cassandra told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview from her hospital it disgusts her to have “such toxic harmful drugs” in her body and she’d like to explore alternative treatments. MULLAN, Idaho (AP) — A snowmobiler who plunged into a freezing Montana ravine says he gave up hope of surviving and wrote goodbye letters to his family before his friends found him, hypothermic and dehydrated, more than a day later.
“When you’re an extreme snowmobiler and you get lost, you’re usually dead,” Barry Sadler told KECI-TV. “You’re going places where people won’t go — where people shouldn’t go.” The 54-year-old Mullan, Idaho, man said part of his extreme mindset was to ride without survival gear or water. CNN International is reporting: “Police found an ID document of Said Kouachi at the scene of the shooting, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported. ‘It was their only mistake,’ said Dominique Rizet, BFMTV’s police and justice consultant, reporting that the discovery helped the investigation.”

PARIS, Jan. 9 (UPI) — A second hostage situation unfolded Friday in Paris after an armed man seized a hostages at a kosher market.
A witness told Sky News U.K. that the gunman was armed with a Kalashnikov when he entered the market. Six hostages were reportedly inside and two were believed to have been killed.
