Another May Day in Seattle is here and gone, but this one looked a little different. Only nine arrests were made, as compared to 16 in 2015. Five officers were injured and property damage was relatively minimal.

After a peaceful immigration rally and march earlier in the day, the scene quickly escalated well before the sun set. Police reported rocks, broken windows, and even molotov cocktails early in the evening. Officers deployed pepper spray and blast balls around 7:30 p.m.   Continue reading “Nine arrests, five SPD officers injured in May Day march”

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NATFA) was the door through which American workers were shoved into the neoliberal global labor market.

By establishing the principle that U.S. corporations could relocate production elsewhere and sell back into the United States, NAFTA undercut the bargaining power of American workers, which had driven the expansion of the middle class since the end of World War II. The result has been 20 years of stagnant wages and the upward redistribution of income, wealth and political power.   Continue reading “NAFTA’s Impact on U.S. Workers”

As the Obama administration is preparing to offer Israel the largest military aid package in U.S. history, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly gunned down a pregnant Palestinian woman in broad daylight.

The brutal incident took place at the Qalandia terminal, north of occupied Jerusalem. IDF soldiers reportedly shot and killed the Palestinian mother of two, who was five months pregnant, and her 16-year-old brother. Then they prevented Palestinian medics on the scene from rendering aid.   Continue reading “IDF Guns Down Pregnant Woman as U.S. Readies Largest Military Aid Package in History for Israel”

Jacksonville, FL — Earlier this week, the Free Thought Project reported on the story of Officer Akinyemi Borisade who was caught on surveillance footage beating Mayra Martinez — while she was in handcuffs. The surveillance footage of the incident was brutal, but on Sunday, the department released dashcam footage of the arrest which shows an even more violent scene.

Martinez, 31, had a bad first day on the job at the local Scores Bar in Jacksonville. That afternoon, she became intoxicated, quit, and refused to leave, so police were called. When police arrived at the bar around 5 p.m., they arrested Martinez and charged her with trespassing and resisting.   Continue reading “Cop Caught in 2 Videos in 2 Incidents, Beating the Same Woman, the 2nd Time She Was Cuffed”

Puerto Rico’s governor on Sunday declared a moratorium on a $422 million debt payment due Monday by the island’s Government Development Bank, the most significant default yet for the U.S. territory facing a massive economic crisis.

Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla said in a televised speech that he signed the moratorium on Saturday in what he characterized as a “painful decision” based on inaction from the U.S. Congress, which continues to debate a legislative fix for Puerto Rico’s $70 billion debt load.  Continue reading “Puerto Rico declares moratorium on Government Development Bank’s debt”

LOS ANGELES — Hundreds of May Day marchers chanting slogans and carrying signs — and at least one Donald Trump piñata — took to the streets of Los Angeles on Sunday calling for immigrant and worker rights and decrying what they see as hateful presidential campaign rhetoric.

It’s one of several events in cities nationwide to call for better wages for workers, an end to deportations and support for an Obama administration plan to give work permits to immigrants in the country illegally whose children are American citizens.   Continue reading “May Day marchers take to US streets in heated election year”

To casual observers, Oregon might seem like an idyllic state where people are at one with nature, cycling and hiking surrounded by greenery, and fishing in crystal-clear streams. While the state is undoubtedly blessed with an abundance of natural riches, what you see on the surface is only part of the story.

What is the rest of the story, you ask? The award-winning new film from Pacific Rivers, Behind the Emerald Curtain, fills in a lot of the blanks. The film paints a bleak but honest picture of Oregonians affected by logging, landslides caused by clearcutting and toxic pesticide spraying.   Continue reading “Oregon’s natural beauty may vanish in the near future, thanks to toxic pesticides, man-made landslides and excessive logging”

PORTLAND, Ore. — Attorneys for an Oregon couple that was ordered to pay $135,000 in emotional damages to two lesbians after they declined to provide a cake for the women’s “wedding” have filed their argument for appeal with the Oregon Court of Appeals.

This case “is about the state forcing business owners to publicly facilitate ceremonies, rituals, and other expressive events with which they have fundamental and often, as in this case, religious disagreements,” the brief reads. “In this case, BOLI misinterpreted [the law], mistakenly concluding that declining to facilitate same-sex weddings is legally the same as refusing to sell goods or services to gay people.”   Continue reading “Oregon Bakers Ordered to Pay $135,000 for Declining ‘Gay Wedding’ File Argument in Appeals Court”
