Illegal immigration in 2016 has already surpassed 2015 with two months still to go in the fiscal year, driven by a renewed surge of illegal immigrant children and families from Central America attempting to sneak into the U.S.

Nearly 34,000 people were caught at the southwest border in July, up 5,000 compared to a year ago. Six people have died in Louisiana, the state registrar for vital records, Devin George, told reporters Monday. HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston mother who calmly told an acquaintance that she had drowned her two children in a bathtub had at first tried to bury their bodies next to her home before placing them under a neighbor’s house, police said Monday.

Sheborah Thomas, 30, was charged Sunday with capital murder of a person under age 6, according to court records. NEW YORK (AP) — The Latest on the fatal shootings of a New York City mosque leader and his associate (all times local): 11:55 a.m. New York City police detectives investigating the slayings of an imam and his associate have detained and questioned a man as part of an attempt to identify a vehicle seen after the shooting.

Authorities say surveillance footage showed the car leaving the scene of Saturday’s shooting in Queens. Investigators said Monday that the car matched the description of one involved in an unsolved hit-and-run crash in Brooklyn. EASTMAN, Ga. (AP) — A man charged in the weekend slaying of a Georgia police officer was arrested early Monday in northern Florida, where sheriff’s deputies found the suspect hiding in the trunk of his sister’s car.

Deputies in Nassau County, Florida, apprehended 24-year-old Royheem Delshawn Deeds during a traffic stop about 1 a.m., said Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper. Deeds is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Eastman Patrol Officer Tim Smith, 30. Keelhauling is a form of punishment once meted out to sailors at sea. The sailor was tied to a line that looped beneath the vessel, thrown overboard on one side of the ship, and dragged under the ship’s keel, either from one side of the ship to the other, or the length of the ship (from bow to stern). As the hull was usually covered in barnacles and other marine growth, if the offender was pulled quickly, keelhauling would typically result in serious cuts, loss of limbs and even decapitation. If the victim was dragged slowly, his weight might lower him sufficiently to miss the barnacles, but this method would frequently result in his drowning.

MARSHALL, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri prosecutor has dropped charges against a man who was accused of trying to shoot a police officer to avoid arrest, saying he thinks the two officers who were there lied about what happened and that their supervisor covered it up so that the criminal case could proceed.
