California’s attempt to curb emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, is facing vocal opposition from a dairy industry that fears government meddling in the flatulence of its cows.
The California Air Resources Board (ARB) has set a goal of slashing methane emissions by 40% by 2030, from 2013 levels, and has targeted the belching and farting – known as “enteric fermentation” – of California’s 5.5 million beef and dairy cows, as well as the manure they create. If Obamacare enrollments continue their current trend and insurers continue to hike premiums at alarming rates then Republicans may not have to worry about “repealing and replacing Obamacare” as it might just work itself out “naturally”. The 4th open enrollment period for Obamacare begins on November 1, 2016 and industry experts are warning that another year of tepid demand from “young and healthy” Americans could force more insurers out of the exchanges effectively marking the end of Obamacare as we know it. According to a story published by The Hill, 11 million people bought health insurance through the exchanges for 2016 which was drastically below the Congressional Budget Office’s initial projection of 21 million. Senate Bill 11, allowing concealed handgun license holders 21 and older (or 18if active military) to carry in campus buildings, was signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, in June 2015. Bitcoin investors, beware! $72 million USD worth of bitcoin was recently stolen from Hong Kong’s Bitfenix exchange. All trading within the company, including all digital token deposits to and withdrawals from Bitfinex, have been stopped until the culprits are caught.
Bitfenix is a trading platform for bitcoin, Litecoin and Ether that includes margin trading along with exchange and margin funding. Bitfinex is the world’s largest dollar-based exchange for bitcoin and is known for having deep liquidity in the U.S. dollar/bitcoin currency pair. The Hong Kong-based company is also a popular site for margin trading, process in which traders can borrow a certain number of bitcoin and close their account with that same number plus interest. A 7.2-magnitude earthquake has struck southeast off the island nation of Vanuatu in Oceania, US Geological Survey has reported. An alert over a local threat of a tsunami was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).
The quake hit less than 500 kilometers southeast of the Republic of Vanuatu (population 243,000) and 109 kilometers off the coast of Ile Hunter, part of French Pacific territory of New Caledonia (population 262,000), according to the USGS. U.S. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said the Obama administration may announce as early as Thursday that it is shifting more money into fighting the Zika virus.
“Maybe today or tomorrow,” Pelosi told reporters in a hallway on Thursday. She did not give an amount, but said, “I think they are going to try to do it a piece at a time, hoping that something else will happen,” an apparent reference to the administration’s request that the Republican-led Congress approve a funding bill to combat the virus.
