The 83-year-old Hatch, the longest-serving Republican in the Senate, opted for retirement despite a full-court press from President Donald Trump to stay in Washington, particularly as Romney’s ambition for the seat became apparent.   Continue reading “Sen. Last week we solicited end-of-the-year donations and thanks to the response of kind benefactors we can now say we have received help from 2% of the readership, rather than the 1% we cited previously.

2% support is something of a joke, but we’ve been on a shoestring budget for so long we are are hardened to it, and this On the Contrary blog, thanks to the handful of generous readers who answered our call for assistance, can now resume for the next several weeks.   Continue reading “Winston Churchill; protests in Iran and “Justifying the Ways of God””

The footage on social media has sparked outrage across France, with president Emmanuel Macron promising to bring the culprits to justice.  Macron said: ‘Those guilty of the cowardly and criminal lynching of police doing their duty on the night of December 31st will be found and punished.”

The two officers arrived at a house in Champigny following reports of widespread disorder outside the address, where a New Year’s party was taking place.  A number of people were turned away from the house, which led to fighting in the street.  The attackers ran into a nearby housing estate after destroying the patrol car, which was turned upside down and left in ruins.   Continue reading “France Outraged After Migrants Attack Female Officer In Vicious Beating”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The top American commander for the Middle East wants a more aggressive Afghan military pressuring Taliban and other insurgents over the normally quieter months of Afghanistan’s winter, and then quickly going on the offensive in the spring. It’s all part of a plan the United States hopes will change the course of a war now entering its 17th year.

Gen. Joseph Votel of U.S. Central Command said an influx of new American trainers can help escalate the fight. They’ll be operating with Afghan units, closer to the front lines and at greater risk, but Votel said U.S. commanders will ensure American and allied forces have adequate protection.   Continue reading “Top US commander wants more aggressive Afghan push this year”

New Zealand Grammy-winning pop star Lorde has been blasted as a “bigot” by a controversial U.S. rabbi for dropping a planned concert in Israel to protest the nation’s treatment of Palestinians.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and his World Values Network harshly criticized the 21-year-old singer in a full-page ad in The Washington Post that appeared Sunday, saying she was joining a “global anti-Semitic boycott of Israel.” The New Jersey-based Orthodox rabbi — who’s a regular contributor to Breitbart News and once served as Michael Jackson’s spiritual adviser — added that “21 is young to be a bigot.” The ad states: “Tell Lorde and her fellow bigots that Jew-hatred has no place” in the 21st century.  Continue reading “U.S. Rabbi Rips Lorde For ‘Anti-Semitic’ Israel Concert Boycott In Washington Post Ad”

The U.S. has quietly ceded some arenas of the war in Syria to Russia and its allies, according to the Military Times.

The U.S. and Russia have been supporting opposing factions on the ground to claim as much territory as possible along the Euphrates River Valley in eastern Syria in the last few months of the war. Even so, the U.S. has apparently given up its longstanding bid to confront the Syrian government directly, though not without taking a political stab at Syria and Russia first.   Continue reading “US Quietly Ceded Part of Syria to Russia Last Week and Nobody Is Talking About It”
