LOCUST GROVE, GA — A police officer was killed and two sheriff’s deputies were injured in a shooting Friday in Henry County, authorities said at a press conference. The alleged shooter, who was being placed under arrest by the officers, also was shot and killed.

The slain police officer has been identified as Chase Maddox, 26. Now in its 11th week of high activity, the current US influenza season is still active in 48 states, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This year’s flu is breaking records for hospitalizations and is on track to infect about 34 million Americans this season.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf on Friday ordered counties that plan to replace their electronic voting systems to buy machines that leave a paper trail — a safeguard against hacking — but his budget doesn’t include any money to fund the replacement of the state’s aging, increasingly vulnerable fleet.

When California parents Leah Beabout and Christopher Vega asked for medical evidence before doctors remove their 2 year old daughter’s kidney, the hospital called Child Protective Services and seized custody of their child.

Leah and their daughter Grace Alleluia had been visiting in Las Vegas when Leah felt a lump in her daughter’s side. An emergency room doctor told her that it was a mass that might be cancer and that she would need to have her kidney removed immediately. WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A U.S. budget deal adopted by Congress on Friday includes what advocates call a landmark compromise to provide an estimated $1.5 billion over 10 years to try to keep struggling families together, including those with babies born dependent on opioids.

The provision allows assistance on mental health, substance abuse and parenting whenever any child is deemed at imminent risk of entering foster care.
