WASHINGTON — Police were investigating a report Thursday of a possible explosive device in a pickup truck outside the Library of Congress on Capitol Hill and have evacuated the area around the building, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.

U.S. Capitol Police said officers were “responding to a suspicious vehicle near the Library of Congress.” The building is near the Capitol and the Supreme Court. Police have also evacuated congressional staff offices nearby, encouraging people to remain calm and use the underground tunnels if necessary to evacuate away from the area. Gov. Doug Ducey called for Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to resign after comments made to Texas border patrol agents were leaked on Thursday, calling the border crisis “unsustainable,” and saying that “if our borders are the first line of defense, we’re going to lose.”

A murder charge has been dismissed against a Houston police officer who had been linked to a deadly 2019 botched raid in the city that left two homeowners dead, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Officer Felipe Gallegos will not face a trial due to the conduct of a former prosecutor who handled the case, according to Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Tuesday that a “fair amount” of U.S. weaponry had fallen into the hands of the Taliban since the hard-line Islamic militant group’s rapid takeover Afghanistan in recent days.

During a White House press briefing, Sullivan was ask what will happen with the billions of dollars in equipment, including guns, ammunition and helicopters given to the Afghanistan government in the two decades before its collapse. He said that a rapid withdrawal of troops is necessary. The mask requirement will go into effect on Thursday and will last until September 21. Several schools in Tennessee are under lockdown Tuesday morning after an “emergency situation” at Volunteer High School in Church Hill, about 80 miles northeast of Knoxville, near the border of Virginia.
