Bloomberg’s China troubles took another ugly twist over the weekend with the news, first reported by the New York Postthat award-winning journalist Michael Forsythe has been suspended, a week after the New York Times reported that the agency had spiked an investigation he had worked on looking into the financial interests of China’s senior leadership.

According to unnamed Bloomberg employees, that story had been killed over fears that the company, whose news website is already blocked in China, would be expelled entirely. Amazingly, this whole story may have been first broken in a video by Taiwan’s Next Media Animation studio, which in its own inimitable way implied that the whole affair may be tied to soon-to-be-ex-Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s business interests.   Continue reading “Bloomberg Suspends China Reporter Amid Censorship Scandal”

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) wants to make sure that there is a strong progressive voice in the 2016 presidential field, and he’s willing to jump in if no one else does.

“There are people in this world who, ever since they were 12 years of age, they decided they wanted to be president of the United States. That is honestly not me,” Sanders told the Burlington Free Press last week. “Anyone who really, really wants to be president is slightly crazy because this is an unbelievably difficult job given the crises that this country faces today.”   Continue reading “Bernie Sanders Open To 2016 Presidential Run”

DENNING, N.Y. — Blanketed by the stillness of stone-faced mountains and endless trees now shaded rust and gold, the town of Denning is quiet, so quiet, one longtime resident likes to say, you can hear your heartbeat.

As in other towns in the Catskills, the 550 residents of Denning are a mix of weekenders and full-timers with the occasional celebrity tucked in, like the actor Judd Hirsch, who has lived in the area for more than 40 years. Like his neighbors — neighbors being a relative term, as some live hundreds of yards apart — he came for the peace, but what Mr. Hirsch is proposing to do on his 96-acre property is creating no small amount of disturbance.   Continue reading “Judd Hirsch’s Wind-Power Plan Unsettles Catskill Town”

The impact of Nanny BloombergThe New York Post – by Kate Briquelet

With the election of Bill de Blasio, Mayor Bloomberg may be on his way out — but his pro-health policies will continue to mold New Yorkers from the cradle to the grave.

In his three terms, Nanny Bloomberg waged war on salt and soda, banned smoking in parks and pushed breast-feeding by having hospitals hide the formula.

Now in the twilight of his administration, Hizzoner is fighting for a slew of edicts before he exits, including mandatory flu shots for children and a crackdown on tanning beds.   Continue reading “The impact of Nanny Bloomberg”

A consumer advocacy group says it has documented more than 100 excavations of potential construction problems across a 250-mile stretch of the Keystone XL pipeline’s Texas portion, raising questions about the integrity of one of the the most controversial crude oil transportation projects in recent history, which stretches below more than 600 rivers and streams in the state.

The segment of the Keystone XL pipeline that will pipe crude oil from Cushing, Okla., to the oil refineries in Texas’ Gulf Coast is nearly complete, and the Canadian energy company Transcanada says the extension will come online this year or early next. Unlike the hotly contested northern segment of the pipeline, which connects Oklahoma to the tar sands in Alberta, Canada, the southern section doesn’t require federal approval because it does not cross any international boundaries.   Continue reading “Report Questions Keystone XL Pipeline’s Integrity”

Nov. 14 (Bloomberg) — The New York City Police Department’s plan for security at the World Trade Center is akin to the erection of a “Berlin Wall,” a group of residents of Lower Manhattan said in a lawsuit against the department.
