Wendy Bradshaw loves teaching. But when the new mom realized that in five years she’d be sending her baby daughter into the same public school system where she works, the thought filled her with dread. So she resigned, and explained why in a letter that’s going viral with parents and teachers across the country.

“Like many other teachers across the nation, I have become more and more disturbed by the misguided reforms taking place which are robbing my students of a developmentally appropriate education,” Bradshaw wrote to the Polk Country School Board in Florida, in a letter she later posted on Facebook. “I just cannot justify making students cry anymore. They cry with frustration as they are asked to attempt tasks well out of their zone of proximal development. … Their shoulders slump with defeat as they are put in front of poorly written tests that they cannot read, but must attempt.”   Continue reading “Teacher’s resignation goes viral: ‘It is not the children who are disordered’”

President Obama’s denial of the proposed 1,179-mile pipeline, which would have carried 800,000 barrels a day of carbon-heavy petroleum from the Canadian oil sands to the Gulf Coast, comes as he is seeking to build an ambitious legacy on climate change.   Continue reading “Obama Rejects Construction of Keystone XL Oil Pipeline”

A grand jury recommended clearing one Atlanta-area cop in the fatal shooting of a man seeking help, but couldn’t reach an agreement about another police officer’s killing of an unarmed man in controversial circumstances.

The DeKalb County grand jury said the district attorney shouldn’t indict DeKalb Officer Joseph Pitts for the December killing of Kevin Davis, 44, who had called 911 seeking help because his girlfriend had been stabbed. Anna from “Frozen” and Captain Phasma from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” are now U.S. citizens. So are a hot dog, a butterfly, a SWAT team officer and a mini-Donald Trump.

Or, at least, their likenesses are. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services hosted a special naturalization ceremony on Friday for children whose parents recently became U.S. citizens. Since it was the day before Halloween, the kids were invited to wear costumes and go trick-or-treating around the offices afterward.   Continue reading “Cinderella, A Hot Dog And A Mini-Donald Trump Just Became U.S. Citizens”

Moments before he died, Charly Keunang took a swing at a cop. This wasn’t an ordinary jab or hook. In cell phone video filmed by a bystander in March, the 43-year-old homeless man can be seen spinning toward a group of Los Angeles police officers, arms flailing. He looks more like the Tasmanian Devil than Mike Tyson.

The whirlwind attack lasts a few seconds, and then ends just as quickly as it began. Keunang, a Cameroonian immigrant who was known as “Africa” on Los Angeles’ Skid Row, careens wildly into the incoming fist of one of the officers. The cop punches Keunang in the face and takes him to the ground, where the scuffle continues.   Continue reading “Here’s How Police Could End Up Making Body Cameras Mostly Useless”

Forcing cops to provide receipts to people they stop — but don’t arrest — will invite complaints against the NYPD and make officers less aggressive, the head of city’s largest police union said Tuesday.

In other words, welcome to the bad old days.

Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch said the stop-and-frisk receipts list the contact information for the Civilian Complaint Review Board — an independent police watchdog group. The presence of the CCRB’s contact information on the receipts, Lynch says, will give rise to “retaliatory complaints” against cops.   Continue reading “NYPD receipts for nonarrests will spur complaints against cops, making them less aggressive: PBA head”
