Environmental cues like smoking, fat intake, even trauma it seems cause alterations to gene activity and expression, all while keeping the DNA sequence intact. Epigenetics is the study of such genetic alterations caused by physiological and psychological environmental exposure. The big question in the field right now is whether these genetic modifications are passed down from one generation to the next. One recent study seems to suggest that epigenetic modifications are indeed inheritable. Holocaust survivors, for instance, passed down genetic changes associated with stress disorder (the modification was there initially for obvious reasons) to their children. These alterations were not witnessed in the control group and mark the first evidence “of transmission of pre-conception stress effects resulting in epigenetic changes in both the exposed parents and their offspring in humans,” said Rachel Yehuda, the led researcher.   Continue reading “Holocaust survivors encode trauma in their genes and pass it on to offspring”

No matter the subject you wish to illuminate under the spotlight of scrutiny — whether it be finance, intellect, or even morality — Washington D.C. habitually operates with a deficit. Though at a quick glance it might seem that generally everything on Capitol Hill is in short supply, there is an unquestioned surplus when it comes to warmongers.   Continue reading “Dick Cheney To Be Immortalized With Statue in US Capitol”

What a way to give your relatives one last middle finger before you die.

An 85-year-old woman in Austria did not want her heirs to inherit any of her money. Knowing she couldn’t take it with her, she decided she didn’t want anyone else to either, so she did the next best thing: she shredded it.   Continue reading “Dying Granny Shreds a Million in Cash Just to Spite Her Heirs”

A widespread practice in the US known as “pay to stay” charges jail inmates a daily fee while they are incarcerated. For those who are in and out of the local county or city lock-ups – particularly those struggling with addiction – that can lead to sky-high debts.

David Mahoney is $21,000 (£13,650) in debt. Not from credit cards. Not from school loans.

He’s accumulated the massive tab because of the days he spent locked up in the local jail in Marion, Ohio, which is a small town with a major heroin epidemic. Mahoney, a lanky 41-year-old, has struggled with addiction since he was a teenager, eventually stealing to fuel his habit. He got caught a lot, even burgling the same bar twice.   Continue reading “The US inmates charged per night in jail”

Investigators of the Russian plane crash in Egypt are “90 percent sure” the noise heard in the final second of a cockpit recording was an explosion caused by a bomb, a member of the investigation team told Reuters on Sunday.

The Airbus (AIR.PA) A321 crashed 23 minutes after taking off from the Sharm al-Sheikh tourist resort eight days ago, killing all 224 passengers and crew. Islamic State militants fighting Egyptian security forces in Sinai said they brought it down.   Continue reading “Investigators ’90 percent sure’ bomb downed Russian plane”

The release Thursday of the 5,544-page text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership—a trade and investment agreement involving 12 countries comprising nearly 40 percent of global output—confirms what even its most apocalyptic critics feared.

“The TPP, along with the WTO [World Trade Organization] and NAFTA [North American Free Trade Agreement], is the most brazen corporate power grab in American history,” Ralph Nader told me when I reached him by phone in Washington, D.C. “It allows corporations to bypass our three branches of government to impose enforceable sanctions by secret tribunals. These tribunals can declare our labor, consumer and environmental protections [to be] unlawful, non-tariff barriers subject to fines for noncompliance. The TPP establishes a transnational, autocratic system of enforceable governance in defiance of our domestic laws.”   Continue reading “TPP Is the Most Brazen Corporate Power Grab in American History”

Have you had the feeling that your elected representatives were not representing you? Of course, you have. We have all felt that way and not just when we were represented by those against whom we voted. But, if you could, would you remove them? Most of us would not resort to such drastic measures, but one city has.

Members of a city council in Iowa voted Monday to remove a veterans memorial that included a cross from a local park, and in turn, members of the community voted on Tuesday to remove the council members from office.

Wisconsin is one step closer to implementing a policy that would require some applicants to take a drug test in order to receive food stamps, job training or unemployment insurance.

Gov. Scott Walker announced on Tuesday that he has approved an administrative rule submitted by the state Department of Children and Families that would establish a process to screen for and test for the use of controlled substances by applicants for state work experience programs, and to refer those determined to be abusing drugs to a treatment program.    Continue reading “Scott Walker approves administrative rule to require drug testing for public benefits”

Watch Ben Swann rip apart the all the gun control pundits who have been casually rewriting the 2nd Amendment.

We’ve heard ridiculous claims that the 2nd Amendment is “outdated” or worthless because the government is armed to the teeth far and away over the citizenry. We’ve heard semantic arguments that the 2nd Amendment never meant for “individuals” to protect themselves but was only for “militias” (as if a militia is not comprised of individuals).   Continue reading “Founding Fathers Added 2nd Amendment to Protect Us from a Government that Would Turn Against Us”
