This is a recipe handed down to me by my mom. It’s been in my family since I was a kid (back when dirt was new). I’ve tweaked it slightly to my own satisfaction, but will also provide the original specs. I’ve yet to come across a store-bought cookie that equals them.

• 2 cups sugar

An obscure regulation designed to close a gun law loophole that allows some people to avoid background checks when purchasing machine guns and silencers has sparked one of the more unusual gun control debates of the year. That’s because those doing the arguing are all gun enthusiasts. Gun control groups have stayed out of this one.

The regulation in question — proposed earlier this year by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) — has drawn more than 9,000 comments. On Wednesday, 35-year-old Krystal Barrows was resting on her couch when Sgt. Brett McKnight shot and killed her during a failed drug raid.

Police had gathered outside of Barrows’ trailer home to conduct a heroin bust when McKnight’s gun went off by “accident.” The bullet went through the exterior of the trailer and struck Barrows.
