WEST POINT, Miss. — West Point police said a man received life-threatening injuries in what they are investigating as an aggravated assault at a restaurant.

Ralph Weems IV, who was injured early Saturday, was in fair condition Sunday at North Mississippi Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Genie Causey said without elaborating.

A relative, Bradley Barnes of Madison, told The Associated Press by telephone on Sunday that his brother-in-law was in a medically induced coma following brain surgery. “They’re going to try and wake him up tomorrow and see what damage was done,” Barnes said, describing Weems as a 32-year-old former Marine who had served in Iraq.   Continue reading “Mississippi man beaten after he’s warned restaurant wasn’t safe for whites, witness says”

President Obama is working to create a new international climate change accord that would get other nations to reduce their carbon emissions, but in a way that would not require the deal to be ratified by the Senate.

Obama’s climate team is putting together a “politically binding” deal to “name and shame” nations to cut their emissions, according to The New York Times.

Videotape proved essential for Freddie Gregory, a motorist falsely accused of traffic violations by a high-ranking Kentucky State Police trooper. The US Court of Appeals on Friday allowed Gregory to pursue false arrest charges against Lieutenant Phillip Burnett.

Since February 2009, Lieutenant Burnett had stopped Gregory on three occasions under what the motorist considered to be bogus circumstances. The 53-year-old decided to install a video camera to document the harassment. The device was ready on April 4, 2009, when Gregory decided to take his granddaughter to lunch in his pickup truck. Congressional investigators made another call for the appointment of an IRS scandal special prosecutor after discovering that key lawyers for the scandal-plagued agency have a “conflict of interest” in the case.

Department of Justice tax division attorney Andrew Strelka, who represented the IRS in litigation related to the scandal, worked under Lerner at the IRS Exempt Organizations division from 2008 to 2010. County governments on individual islands in Hawaii may have stirred the pot when it comes to genetically modified crop and pesticide use, but U.S. District Court Judge Barry M. Kurren has now ordered them out of the kitchen.

The City of Detroit has once again begun shutting off water service for residents who are months behind on their bills. The move comes as a 30-day moratorium on shut-offs ended on Monday.

According to the Associated Press, the city was scheduled to have crews out on Tuesday in order to commence with the controversial shut-offs, which are expected to hit 420 customers at first. A 33-year-old American man who grew up in Minnesota and then moved to California was killed over the weekend in Syria while battling alongside the militant grew formerly known as ISIS, NBC News reported on Tuesday.

According to the network, Douglas McAuthur McCain was killed over the weekend while fighting with the Islamic State, or IS, against members of a separate opposition group in Syria. The release of an autopsy report in Louisiana is raising new questions about the unusual shooting death of a 22-year-old black male who died earlier this year in a police car while his hands were cuffed behind his back.

RT reported earlier this year that police in Iberia Parish, LA said Victor White III died in early March after he fatally shot himself while handcuffed in the back of a squad car. White had reportedly been apprehended for possession of drugs, and was searched no fewer than two times before being cuffed and placed in the backseat of a police vehicle. Close to 200 state and local police departments in the United States have been suspended for losing military-level equipment transferred to them by the Pentagon, a new investigation found.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Burger King plans to become the latest U.S. company to shift its legal address out of the country by merging with a foreign company. Burger King has announced plans to buy Tim Hortons, the Canadian coffee-and-doughnut chain.

Burger King’s operations will stay in Miami. But the corporate headquarters of the new company will be in Canada.
